Chiefs, Eagles & 49ers Fighting It Out For Sean Smith

The Kansas City Chiefs have been linked to Miami Dolphins CB Sean Smith since first thing Saturday morning but it looks like they aren’t the only teams in the race.’s Jef Darlington is reporting that there are three teams to keep an eye on when it comes to Smith.

The 49ers have been extremely active so far this offseason. They’ve reportedly already agreed to trade QB Alex Smith to the Chiefs and today the defending NFC Champions traded for Baltimore Ravens WR Anquan Boldin.

As for the Eagles, they are expected to be parting ways with Nnamdi Asomugha and will need help at the CB position.

Smith is believed to be the top CB on the market. He possesses excellent size and speed for a corner and is still very young. It looks like it come down to the highest bidder.

I wouldn’t rule out the new Chiefs regime in this venture. They have been extremely efficient at executing their offseason plan so far. At this point, I would put anything past them.

What do you think, Addicts? Can the Chiefs beat out the Eagles and 49ers for Smith’s services?

I sure as heck hope so!!!!

  • Michael Tavis

I would be surprised if the Chiefs can be the highest bidder. I think Rodgers Cromartie is much more likely. That being said I wont put anything past this new regime. They are doing work.

    • Killerdoctor27

      I Agree

    • KCMikeG

Agreed but aren’t we getting close to the cap?? DRC would be more economical. The only thing I am sure of is that there are more surprises ahead.

      • Daniel Mayfield

If there’s a chance they can get him, cut Cassel(which they should do anyway) and the CB Brown. Maybe that will give them enough cap room.

If not Smith, pick up Milliner out of the draft. It shows Robinson isn’t good for coverage but he is for stopping. We need a 2nd coverage man and Stafford was good(if that’s how u spell his name).

We get Smith, or a good CB and the secondary is great! Get Jackson on a role, not pizza roles, to where he can make something out of himself. The 3 men need to get inside to flush the QB out or stop a run. Poe was a rookie so maybe he’ll be better this season.

Just gotta wait and see what they can do. GO CHIEFS!

  • Richard Comstock

I hope so. If they pull this off our defense will be a real foce with no real holes!!!

    Please pull this off!!!

    War chiefs

    • Danny W

      Clone eh?

    • Trent Taylor

Theres a big hole at ILB.

      • KCMikeG

Good point. I think Sutton will have us in some more 4-3′s in addition to the fact that we only were in the 3-4 only 55% of the time with the nickel & dime packages gaining in usage in response to the pass happy attacks. This makes that 4th SILB a little less important and allows for a monster sized run stopper ILB like Washington or his teammate at Georgia Robinson who was very consistent the last three years. Bostic, Johnson & Klien (homer pick 116 & 117 tackles in last two seasons Go Clones!) all have good size and are available in the 4th-5th round.

      • Chief Hokie

True but iLB is probably the easiest position to fill on the defense – not too worried about that as I am CB.

      • Steve Blank

trade back into the second or late first and fill that hole

        • Steve Blank

dont we still have siler? he is fairly serviceable…I wonder what he could do as a starter

  • chiefridgy

    Go chiefs! Get it done!

  • Heilios

This is proving to be a very interesting off season and we haven’t even hit free agency yet! Here’s hoping Dorsey keeps it going all the way to the pre-season!

  • micah stephenson

Yup I had just seen that report on the NFL network. I hope we get Sean Smith. Geno Smith TOO. Lol.

    • t_tyrance

I want them to get geno just as bad as you do my man but I think that ship has sailed big dog lol

      • micah stephenson

I wont give up hope till a different team calls his name.

  • GDL40

I hope so too……cautiously…. I hope we dont end up overpaying too much though. – Also, maybe better if instead of sean Smith they get a good Tackle to go on the right side of the O-line…. cheaper, a solid starter. That would almost wipe out the idea of going Tackle with our #1 pick, would at least be more exciting !!!!

  • Danny W

As agressive as we have been thus far it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if we landed this guy.

  • Troy Utt

Afraid this is going to be a bidding war we no longer can afford to play in, with the moves we have already made! Then again… stranger things have already happened this off-season!

  • Jim Harper

I hate to wish for this. I don’t want to jinx it. This move would give us an amazing secondary. Maybe the best in the league.

  • Daniel Mayfield

I hope so too! I’m sure everybody does!

They get him, move Robinson to FS and KC will be 1 of, if not the best defensive teams.

  • Billy Henshaw

I sure hope the Eagles nab him. Man, has our secondary sucked lately. Glad to here we are releasing Asomugha, though.

  • Philip W

Love to see a Smith/Flowers combo at corner with robinson and berry playing safety. rotate in K. Lewis to keep robinson fresh. Our LB’s are solid and D-line is underrated. Finally, finally i don’t have to hang my head as soon as i tell people I’m a Chief’s fan. Do work J.Dorsey!

    • chiefridgy

Don’t count your chickens just yet…

    • Chief Hokie

I would love this. Although I think our DL could be much better at generating pass rush.

  • KCMikeG

I really like Sean Smith but I believe that Milliner would be the better choice. He is MUCH less expensive! Smith is bigger but Milliner is MUCH faster (4.37 vs 4.5) being able to match up with the best WR’s we would face and cover the TE/WR hybrids like he did Eifert in the National Championship game. Milliner is fast and agile to be able to play on an island in man coverage. His shutdown ability is unique as he is fast enough to turn and run with receivers, but also has the size to defend big receivers. Milliner has great length and quarterbacks struggle to get passes by him. I’m pretty sure no one is saying these things about Smith especially being shut down. Welcome to Milliner Island!

    • Troy Utt

I believe drafting Milliner is the way to go here as well! I was excited for all of a minute about S.Smith and would not be upset if we were to pick him up…but I would have to think we are getting flush up on what we need for the Rookie Wage Cap, and not much left in the coffers unless we were to cut Cassel! I was kind of surprised Reid has not been calling on DRC??? That price tag is somewhere in between the two plus commodities is it not? ( with his what 10 kids? Might as well have one more & field his own team!)

      • Troy Utt

What about RT… it sounds to me like the kid from Central Michigan has moved to the forefront…Unless we are able to strike a deal for a top shelf tackle before hand, it would appear anyway that they are looking at filling that spot.

    • Chief Hokie

I would like Milliner as well but I just can’t see us going with anyone other than Joeckel with the #1. I just don’t see Dorsey feeling comfortable starting a second year guy in Stephenson at RT after only meeting him a month ago and with the limited tape!

  • Stacy D. Smith

I’d actually prefer it if we didn’t win this bidding war. There are better and cheaper options out there.

  • Nico Marquez

Well hopefully we can grab either Sean smith or DRC. Also I’d like to see ILB eithe denelle ellerbe or aj hawk. Even if chiefs can grab one of the two lbs I would still like to see mizzous zavier gooden drafted by chiefs who can learn under Derrick Johnson and either ellerbe or hawk. Who are both subset bowl champs an know what they are doing

  • big chief

So apparently the whole Chiefs aren’t interested in Sean Smith thing was bs?

  • chiefs727

this is going to be a really good year to be a chiefs fan,i just get a really good vibe from this new regime i know only time will tell but even if your the most skeptical person alive you cant deny the that this is the best energy us chiefs fans have felt since the dick vermeil era!!!!!

  • KCtitleist11

I say he goes to philly but damn would it be nice to have him opposite Flowers. the D Line would have all day to get to the QB

  • RepOurChiefs

DO IT! DO IT! DO IT!………….im sooo excited and i just cant hiiiide it!!

  • jesse

i kinda want them to get one of these OT free agents. i mean, Joekel is good but it just seems a waste andthey wanna keep albert. but if they try to move albert, im afraid of whatll happen to the lockerroom morale. sign an OT at least and draft someone like Lotulelei, Miliner, or trade back, pick up some picks and grab some quality young guys. lots of depth at the corner, linebacker, oline and dline in this draft. kinda want them to get a stud tightend if they trade back.

    • Troy Utt

!I am in the Milliner camp as well, but when you look at the possible FA prospects available according to their supposed rank anyway we don’t have a whole lot to choose from! With Winston listed #3 overall for RT & the Chiefs having been as active in the off-season, we have got to be getting close to our limit for spending! Maybe one more FA and then the balance left for the Rookie Wage Pool?

  • freshmeat62

They definitely need to get another CB (despite what Arenas thinks). Robinson will probably be the nickel back. Jalil Brown showed some promise last year, and would keep him over Arenas. I like Arenas as a return guy. He seldom goes down w/ the first hit, but he’s not very elusive.

    • berttheclock

Good point. After reading sfgate/niners, this AM, it looks as though CB has moved to the top of the wish list for Baalke. Picking up Boldin was huge for them, but, it still is not determined how much the Niners will have to pick up for his salary. That could affect what Baalke would be willing to pay Smith. His agent has been saying something in the neighborhood of $8 M multi would be asked, but, that might be a bit too expensive for the Niners. He, probably, will be over paid by any new team, including the Chiefs, but, I am with you about adding defensive backs. Our current Tony G pick can rant all night, but, he has not been able to show he can play corner on a regular basis in the NFL.
However, picking up Boldin for only a sixth is, at this juncture, the steal of the off season.
