PFT: Little Doubt Alex Smith Gets Traded

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Alex Smith rumor mill continues to turn and this time we have yet another confirmation that a trade for the 49ers QB is on the way.

Pro Football Talk is reporting, via a source, that an Alex Smith trade likely, quoting their source as saying that there is “little doubt” that the deal will get done.

This falls in line with what we heard yesterday from Jason La Canfora. La Canfora’s report was called in to question earlier today by Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. Barrows is claiming that a source told him that there is no trade deal in place and that the 49ers are still shopping Smith.

While the PFT report doesn’t confirm there is indeed a deal already done, it does help ease some of the concerns that NFL teams interested in trading for Smith will refuse to to a deal, thus forcing San Francisco’s hand. If the 49ers are unable to deal Smith, they would likely cut him to avoid paying him some guaranteed money.

While there may be some teams employing that strategy, QB is such an important position that some team will likely want to do a trade so they can ensure they get their man. After all, there are no guarantees if Smith becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Stay tuned.

It’s kind of like hearing your girl is sleeping around and you just can’t believe she’s actually dumb enough to do it because you’re smart enough to catch her. That’s how this whole Alex Smith/ Traded draft pick possibility feels right now. Are you really THAT crazy to try this on us…are you really THAT bold to think you’re getting anything then a backup QB who isn’t happy to be anything but a starter? You know what that is folks; that’s unwanted drama in the locker room. I said, “Hey Andy and Dorsey; go get me Smith!” they said “Okay, you diligent and dedicated fan base; how we love your smiling faces! Here’s your Smith!”……Uhhhhh wrong Smith coach.
As I’ve read through several posts around this home site of ours; take a chance. Step up to the plate and give it a swing, get Geno. If you want Alex for a ‘backup,’ fine, but be prepared to deal with a sour face and an unwanted storyline when he isn’t starting half-way through the season. -step off from soap box-

By all accounts he has not been that way in San Fran….Don’t see it as a problem here. I respect your opinions and agree with you a lot but on this one i think you are manufacturing something that does not exist just yet.

To you Mr. White I say thank you for calling me out on my over dramatic musings but I am honestly so in love with the thought of drafting a QB we can cultivate in the history and culture of the Kansas City Chiefs. We’re a great franchise and devout fan base; I’ll take Alex with a condition that we still get Geno…that’s my dream anyway. This division is still up for the taking, it’d be nice to see a 9-7/10-6 record for us next year in contention with Denver. It’s been a drought Ron, I’m thirsty for a winning capable team and I see it coming soon! Thanks for the reply, Go Chiefs!!

Alex Smith and draft a QB in the 2nd round. It may not be Geno but it will be a QB just as good as Geno. Alex Smith is a winner and I want a winner as my starting QB. Time WILL tell that this is a great move (assuming its true).Come on Chiefs nation let’s celebrate this move instead of starting off our new relationship with Reid and Dorsey already pissed off.

    • Chris Tarrants

If we don’t get Geno than bet the farm that 90% of chiefs nation will be pissed off! We finally have a chance at the best qb in a draft and we already have a good LT regardless of Alex smith. We couldn’t care less but we are scared that if we get Alex then we will pass on Geno and that’s where we are coming from

      • JP Esler

More like 50% of Chiefs Nation, not as many people want to reach for a QB as you think.

Their is no Qb in draft and or FA that is better than Geno bc none of them have proved to be better. The first 5 years of his career he was a loser, actually he was Matt Cassel! The only Qb I would be ok with if we don’t get Geno is Ej Manuels.
