Deal For Alex Smith ‘Effectively Complete’ According To Report *UPDATE

Alex Smith may already have his ticket out of San Francisco.

Now he just has to wait a couple of weeks to get it punched.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, a trade for Alex Smith is effectively complete.

That is a pretty big bombshell, especially considering it comes on the heals of this report from Ian Rapoport that the Chiefs are the team showing the most interest in Smith.

If a deal for Smith is already done then the Chiefs have to be considered the favorite to be the trade partner here. Then again, it is hard to trust anything you hear this time of year. Say, for instance, the Chiefs have offered a third-round pick for Smith. The 49ers, wanting to get more for the QB, could let slip that a deal is basically done, hoping to entice other suitors to get involved in a desperate attempt to outbid the “mystery team.” Heck, it is possible that there isn’t even a deal in place at all and the 49ers are just telling La Canfora that.

Still, this report is likely to send shockwaves through Chiefs Nation.

Do you guys think it is a smokescreen or the real deal? If you think it is real, do you think the Chiefs are the mystery team?

UPDATE: Jags beat writer Ryan O’Halloran says that Jacksonville GM Dave Caldwell has denied that his team is the other team mentioned in La Canfora’s report.

Double Update: Cross the Browns off the list.

A lot of smoke there, but we’ll have to wait three weeks for this to become official.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

It may be an attempt to drive up the price but it is a bold attempt. You have to believe the Chiefs are involved in some way, even if it isn’t as serious as the 49ers are making it out to be.

      • Stacy D. Smith

Could also be another team. Buffalo maybe?

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Jags GM told the Jacksonville beat writer that they are not the other team. Could be the Bills, Browns or even Raiders.

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Stacy, how would you feel if it is future picks? Like a 2014 2nd and 5th? Something like that?

          • Stacy D. Smith

I wouldn’t mind it if it were a pick this year. As long as it isn’t too high.

        • KCMikeG

Brownies are having a garage sale on McCoy and Weeden – come on make me an offer they said.

          • Stacy D. Smith

A half a ham sandwich and two warm beers.

          • KCMikeG

For which one? Never mind it’s a pick em.

  • CT

If it is us I will be absolutely disgusted…

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Depends on what we have to give up.

      • Spencer

if its a 4th maybe….i would give up a 5th and 7th…anything higher and look out, Cassel 2.0 is on his way to KC

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

          What about a future pick, like a 2014 2nd or 3rd?

          • ivan

why give any picks that high for alex smith? have you seen him play? seriously the guy has on par skills with matt cassel why the hell would you want him? he can’t win games for you and he needed a super star studded team just to look like a decent qb

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=546161244 Adam Cox

Any time you are a QB and you get beat by Matt Cassel you suck… check it out

          • Michael Shaw

Jesus you guys, the guy was on his way to leading the 49ers to the damn super bowl before the concussion. In 2011 he took them to what a 13-3 record and lost in the NFC Championship game to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Giants. So how is he ANYTHING like Cassel????? I know most of you want Geno, but bashing a guy who has done really well the last couple of years to make your case for Geno @ #1 is really not cool or accurate for that matter.

          • DT58HOF

Exactly! Alex Smith is the best option out of any available QB. I guess people just want a drafted QB just to have a drafted QB. I’m all in on Alex Smith and still drafting a QB in the 2nd round.

          • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Because you have 0 competent QBs on your roster. The Chiefs need to get some depth at the position. Smith doesn’t have to be the starter forever but I’d take him over Cassel and Quinn.

          • Danny W

A conditional future would be pretty ideal.

          • Chief Hokie

Definitely not a second. Why sacrifice future picks for a short term solution?

          • thisistheendoftheendof

            waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too high
the only pick that makes sense is a 4th, its basically a 3rd, and KC has a comp 3rd that is right next to their 4th rounder. so its BASICALLY a free alex smith.

        • Chris Tarrants

Pretty freaking much, same shit different GM, and when they find out he sucks we won’t have Geno to fall back on but fuck it I guess we can make Joeckel play QB because according to Kiper he is gods gift to football

          • micah stephenson

            Yea wat he just said.

          • Chief Hokie

            I concur

      • CT

As a 2-14 team you shouldn’t be giving up high picks, if any.

      • Jarad

I dont think its a bad thing if its KC. Id love for it to be a fourth(doubtful), but ok with a third. What do you think about giving up a 3 for smith and drafting another QB at 34 or late 3/4?

      • Jack Thomas

Why would u just not wait till he’s a free agent, not lose any draft picks and sign him to a more cap friendly contract Patrick?

        • Larry Devore

they probably would have kept him. Not going to let him walk.

          • Jack Thomas

Sorry dude but your dead wrong.the niners are not going to keep him no matter what, remember all the good soldier talk from the superbowl about how supporative Alex was when he was benched and how they would not want to take the cap hit if they kept him. that’s y, and he would be the most expensive back up in the nfl

          • kidkongs

He is still under contract. They wouldn’t just cut him without getting anything in return. Even with both he and Kaepernick’s salaries, they are only paying 10 million this year. That’s not a problem.

          • KCMikeG

They won’t pay him $8.5M to be a back up.

        • Chief Hokie

Because that would be logical move, Jack. Get out of here with that crap man.

          • Jack Thomas

Yeah I thought it made too much sense

          • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

The thinking is that someone will trade something for him. He may never become a free agent.

    • Timothy Dittemore

We will still have to pay him same amount as SF was so waste of money in my eyes and pick regardless what it was. Please please please don’t be us and just smoke

  • cyberry

It they get Alex..they still could go after Geno if they trade down. A lot of teams have needs..they might not be so anxious to grab Geno early..If they get Alex Smith..I”m all for getting Tyler Bray in 2nd or 3rd..let him sit for a year and learn the system…I bet the Jags wish they had done that with Gabbert..

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

      Good point.

    • Jim Harper

      Yes! Another voice of reason.

    • Adam Sherman

Excuse me, they could still go after Geno if they trade down? why on earth would they need to trade down again? if he is the best qb in the draft you just wanna trade on down huh and keep them fingers crossed he will still be there……. sigh……..

      • Barrie Neal Parkes Jr.

I would still trade down no one in there right mind would draft geno #1 he has all his plays given to him no leadership qualities if u want vince young im sure hes ready to come out of retirement or whatever stage hes in in his football career see if we can some how snag st louis 2 1st round picks off of them maybe grab eric fisher and tyler wilson

  • YorDrank

    FIRE ANDY REID

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

      lol. Already?

    • KCMikeG

      Run Dorsey out of town!

      • Jim Harper

Come on Michael. That isn’t you!

        • KCMikeG

Total sarcasm. Just piling on the fire Reid comment!
I am concerned that the fan base has become so accustomed to negativity that no one will be given any margin of error. No one is perfect and unfortunately that seems to be all the fan base will tolerate. People are already threatening to renounce their fan card and the Combine isn’t even over yet. How long will this administration get? So on goes the wash, rinse and repeat.

          • thisistheendoftheendof

no. the problem are the “positive” fans who accept EVERYTHING the chiefs feed them, and buy into this nonsense that it isnt the same ole same ole

          • Michael Shaw

No jack…., it is called optimism. We are optimistic, you are pessimistic. Nothing wrong with that, but I would rather give them enough rope to hang themselves and be ready to smack the horse on the ass when it is time for them to be hung out to dry then to immediately assume the sky is falling. Alex is miles above a better QB than Cassel. He actually played in college and was drafted number overall. Not by us, but does that really matter if the guy can win games for us???? You DO want the team to win right? I know I do and Alex gives us the best shot. NOT Geno as he isn’t NFL ready. He will take a couple of years to develop, so if they take him #1 he now has someone to learn from and if Harbaugh thinks Colin could learn from Alex, then why would you think differently about Geno learning from him?

          • KCPauly

Brady Quinn was drafted in the first round too

          • KCMikeG

So it would be better for the Chief Kingdom if we were all more negative, attacking and hateful of any and all decisions we don’t understand or agree with? Sorry that adds NO value to the experience for me.

    • steve james

Wow put the Drank down you’ve had to much.

    • thisistheendoftheendof

if they get alex smith, I wont be watching chiefs football ever again unless its rooting for another team, a team that actually has the balls to take a qb in the first round since 1992

    • Chief Hokie

I’ll start up the Facebook page, you make the t-shirts, Paddy will handle the banners and airfare costs.

  • YorDrank

Do we really want another back up QB? Cassel was clearly the product of coaching in NE and so was Alex Smith in SF. They benched him becuase they knew he couldnt take them to the next level. Best case he is a little better then cassel. He is a check down QB just like Cassel.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

I think Smith is better than Cassel. At least Smith has won playoff games. I am not saying Alex is the answer but if “coaching” can get the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game with Alex Smith as the QB I’d be thrilled.

      • shayaan

he won games on the back of one of the most dominant defenses and run games in the league. he never inspired confidence as a passer and harbaugh realized this. geno is a higher rated prospect than kaepernick was, and we’re passing on him for a guy kaepernick unseated for the starting job. genius.

      • Adam Sherman

Smith won playoff games? C’mon man you know those teams won because of Defense and coaching. They won despite alex smith, not because him. Don’t think so? O that must be why they replaced him in the middle of the damn season with a 2nd year guy with zero game experience and are now reportedly giving him away for a 4th rounder. pshh…

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Did you watch the 49ers beat New Orleans? As I recall, it was Alex Smith hitting Vernon Davis that won that game.

          • Steve Blank

just a tidbit….Alex Smith’s completion percentage in the redzone was in the 70′s this year…..is that a good number? hmmm? oh yeah…Kaepernicks was somewhere around 40

        • Steve Blank

bullcrap…watch the highlights from that game…Alex Smith was awesome…both throwing and running…he made CLUTCH plays to win that game….and if Im not mistaken, it was a comeback win…right?

        • Steve Blank

you couldnt be more wrong…the defense gave up nearly 500 yards in that game….seriously? the defense? give me a break..smith threw for 300 with 3 tds and no picks…ZERO picks…and he broke a badass 30 yard or so TD run late in the game…give him a break man…7th rated QB in the league prior to his injury….this guy was finally getting it! It usually takes a QB awhile to “GET IT”….he is there and was playing like a true top 10 qb when he got hurt….

      • thisistheendoftheendof

you are going to slurp the positive BS because its your job

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

My job is actually at the FanSided Network as the VP of Content. Arrowhead Addict is a side thing. Although, even if it was my full time job, I wouldn’t be positive for the sake of being positive. In fact, if you have been reading this site for any length of time, you would know that.

  • Doug McD

I think it is us and we will also pickup one in the draft to have them compete for playing time. Possibly even get Foles as well. This would make the draft more clear cut. We need to build for the long term not just now. I want it now as much as anyone does, but we need to trust the system Mr. Hunt put in place.

    • Jim Harper

Thank you! You are exactly right!

  • ivan

my god this organization sucks . how the hell does this make us better. alex smith is cassel and not only that your trading draft picks and want to draft a olinemen to replace albert? where the hell is the improvement.

i swear this team does nothing new ever same thinking , same narrow minded people same shit . right now if this goes down the chiefs should be on real thin ice. they effectively replaced idiots with idiots

    • Larry Devore

stop getting your shorts in a bunch. not even sure if it is kc. talk about chicken little and the sky falling in, get a grip

      • thisistheendoftheendof

stop bring a freaking white knight. they may F you, but thats about it

    • http://www.facebook.com/steve.cox.7564 Steve Cox

Are you kidding???? The ENTIRE OL needs replaced. If you did not notice, almost every single pass play last year no less than 2 rushers were in the pocket within 2-3 seconds…… No wonder ALL QBs in KC were on their backs, running for their lives, or throwing INTS…..

      • Michael Shaw

What? Dude have you lost your mind?!!! You must be an Eagles fan talking about their o-line because ours wasn’t that bad at all. The QB play had nothing to do with the line. We do need back ups, but our starters, Albert, Allen (replaces Lilja I am sure), Hudson, Asmoah and Winston will be fine. They are working on resigning Albert and Bowe, so we will be in GREAT shape with Alex behind Hudson.

        • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Yeah I think the line is pretty good actually. The problem is the QBs.

        • KCMikeG

The injuries and having to throw in rookies Allen & Stephenson into starting roles when they were drafted as developmental players caused some issues along with Hockenstein? playing. We will start healthy and the experience will have benefited them both. Totally agree we need to keep drafting depth on the OL.

  • chiefridgy

    Say it ain’t so…..

  • Brody Hall

Okay… Im all for getting Alex Smith. you can go ahead now and draft Jockel but you still gotta make a play for a qb early in this draft. Either, by some grace of god end up with geno by trading back into round one or by him falling to you and round 2. If not geno then grab EJ Emanuel. This DOES NOT solve the QB issue completely. In fact this could just be the second coming of Cassel which is why you gotta have a backup plan!

    • thisistheendoftheendof

great. give up a pick for cassel part 2, then give up the top pick in franchise history to replace albert
      what a bunch of idiots
this WILL be the story of what was one of the biggest disasters in nfl history.

  • KCMikeG

It could be the faiders, Cards or Browns. Really. It could. No really it still could be one of them and not us. Please don’t let it be us.

    • Chief Hokie

De Nile isn’t just a river in Egypt. The first step is accepting, then getting your hopes up, then getting them crushed, then hoping the next one will be better…then accepting…

    • Doug McD

Would we be thinking like this if Alex Smith had never had the concussion and won the Super Bowl or even made it there and lost?

      • KCMikeG

Yes, because he is at best a Dilfer SB QB who wins because of his team and at worst Cassel 2.0. AND No because SF would be locking him down long term if the fantasy had become a reality.

  • Jim Harper

People need to get a grip. If indeed Alex Smith is coming you should embrace it because he gives us the best chance to win NOW. Secondly it is unlikely that he is the long term answer. If you have watched the combine today you got to see all the QB prospects throw except Barkley and a lot of expert analysis. It is obvious to me that everything we have been hearing is true. All of them including Geno are not quite ready. I am sure the Chiefs will still draft one of them but Alex Smith gives them time to develop while still winning games. I have been in the Geno camp all along, but this is probably the best way to go, and much is sure to happen between now and April 25th, so I am going to show my support for Andy Reid and the task in front of him. Go Chiefs!

    • ArrowFan

Not for 8.5 mill and a forth or higher pick that is way to much.

      • Steve Blank

we had, and still have, plenty of money under the cap…we are going to be fine…no player available at the 34th pick would impact our offense as much as Smith will…

    • thisistheendoftheendof

no. thats CRAP man. so whatever KC does, we have to be happy about and embrace it? SCREW THAT.
I dont care if the qbs this year take longer to develop. smith wont get us past 8-10 wins and a playoff exit
so glad we wont be able to draft a top qb next year either. gosh its fun being a KC fan
yeah you are right, lets embrace the SHITTY QB we just gave up PICKS for

      • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Could you live with Smith getting the Chiefs to a playoff victory then being replaced by whichever QB the Chiefs draft in April later, say in 2014? Like what happened in San Francisco? Cause that is likely the plan.

    • Steve Blank

      hell yeah…love the attitude

  • Tucson Chief Fan

Alex Smith and hopefully EJ Manuel in the 2nd. Better than the current situation.

  • TambaHawk29

So the 49ers apparently have 11 draft picks plus 3 compensatory picks,
but they don’t have room for 14 rookies on their roster. In other words,
they’ll probably be getting rid of picks by trading up and getting
quality over quantity. We should trade them the first overall for Alex
Smith, their first round pick (1.31), plus like their second (2.31) and
one of their third rounders (3.12 or 3.31). And maybe even more than
than that since they would technically be moving up like 30 spots in the
first round. This would make sense for both teams. Then if Dorsey wants
he could trade some of the picks we acquired through that trade to move
higher up in first round if he has his eye on someone. Or stay put and
draft Te’o, or the best CB, WR, or QB available.

    I can’t believe
I’m saying we should trade the first overall pick for Alex Smith, but
there just really aren’t any players worth it this year and I would
rather have a whole bunch of picks instead of a Joeckel/Albert
    swap/combination.

  • Ehud

I do not understand trading for Alex Smith. I would rather take Matt Moore for no picks than Alex Smith for a pick. This is especially true for this draft where depth is the best thing about it and more picks is better

    • thisistheendoftheendof

alex smith means at least 2-3 years of alex smith
      I wish people understood this

  • Killerdoctor27

If this report is true, then I will get myself ready for more years of unsightly Chiefs football. It just makes no sense if this is their plan of action! First I would like to say I view Alex Smith as a game manager AT BEST! He had one of the NFL’s best Olines, one of the NFL’s best TE’s, one the NFL’s best defenses, and a very reliable run game. The Chiefs in my eyes only have a good run game. Alex Smith is only a more glorified Matt Cassel. To think Alex Smith is some Great QB is a fallacy!

This is a very deep draft class and I think if the Chiefs EVER want a shot at winning a Super Bowl, they need to grow a pair and draft a QB with true star potential. At least try! The Smith they should be looking at is Geno Smith NOT Alex Smith. We all know that Alex = game manager , but Geno could one day be a Star! Why not take a shot? They should not waste the #1 pick on a replacement LT! You already have a good LT now go after a future star QB!

If I was running the front office this would be my plan. First I would do whatever I had to do to get Albert and Colquitt resigned. Then I would tag Bowe and I would show both Jackson/Cassel the door. And with the first pick in the draft you take Geno Smith! Then in the 2nd round you add a guy who geno is comfortable throwing the ball to in Tavon Austin…. Now Tavon MAY get picked in the first so you may have to go up and get him. Trust me this guy will be special in the NFL! From there on out you add the best players available. I would look at CB, S, TE, and another QB to compete.

This is how you build teams that compete for Super Bowls! An example I would like to give is the 2008 Miami Dolphins. With the first pick in the draft they took Jake Long and passed on Matt Ryan. Now Jake Long is leaving Miami and Matt Ryan is leading his team to the playoffs. I think the question we should be asking is do we want to end up like Miami? Or do we want to end up like the Falcons? I think we all see the path that looks greener on the other side. My only worry is that the Chiefs might be too blind to find the path….

    • Adam Sherman

yea were f’d man, dammit we are going to be the dolphins in that example aren’t we ?! nooo i don’t wanna be the dolphins I wanna be the falcons! :(

      • Killerdoctor27

Well Adam if all these reports are true then we may very well be taking the path of the Dolphins. The only way this whole situation can be ok in my mind is if they get Alex Smith for no more than a 5th round pick and they draft a good young QB in the early rounds to sit behind Smith for a while. Geno Smith is by far the best QB in this draft… Why not take him #1 overall and give him time to learn from the older smith. But it seems the Chiefs may be dead set on just replacing an already good LT with a rookie LT. It just seems ridiculous to me and I view it as a wasted #1 overall pick because you’re right back where you started last year. A good LT and no hope at QB. If they were smart they would sign Albert, draft Geno Smith even if they have Alex Smith, and get more help on offense… If Tavon Austin falls to the chiefs in the 2nd round this Chiefs passing offence could become explosive once again….

        • thisistheendoftheendof

yep. waste the top pick, they wont see austin, hes gone in mid rd 1, and KC wont see manuel, hes gone in rd 1 too or at 33
gosh being a KC fan SUCKS

    • Joe Myers

well it IS a long hard road out of hell .

      • Killerdoctor27

Very True….. Oh and nice DBZ logo!! :)

  • sidibeke

Not thrilled but okay if price isn’t too high. I hope this doesn’t reflect thinking that no way they take Geno at #1. That would be foolish before the combine had even completed.

    • Chief Hokie

This town is too small for the two of them (Alex and Geno). If we’re picking up Alex Smith you can bet your bottom we’re drafting nothing more than a project QB in the 2nd round or later.

  • DavePC

I’m not necessarily thrilled or dejected about this. If it’s true (a mighty big IF), I think he’s an improvement over Cassel. Alex Smith has a track record as a good guy and a good teammate.

But IF this is the Chiefs, I want to see another QB in the draft somewhere. I also don’t want to see an excessively high cost draft pick for him. So, we’ll see.

    • Jack Thomas

Sounds like cassell all over again to me

  • Andrew

Chiefs fans… We are all ignorant… We finally have a regime that is willing to make moves. Alex smith is a good qb ad I am glad that the front office is willing to make bold moves. He’s no Peyton but Alex smith gives us a better opportunity than any other FA qbs and there isn’t a worthy #1 pick.. let’s build depth, draft a couple of defensive players and get some wr depth, draft a rb… Chiefs fans, we need to chill. Good things area happening

  • Joe Myers

ok im not to popular hear on one arrowheaddict but I love this site . And hear goes I will be shocked if we did the same thing we did when Scott got hear rushed out got matt Cassel . I feel like that’s what’s going on hear with Alex smith lets be 100% about this he was a bad QB when the NFC west was really bad . He got better but average I really dont think he will make the chiefs relevant 9-7 at the most . Payton twice rivers twice we all know the chiefs and raiders are to close for our comfort man the AFC aint no joke . AFC average teams are better then NFC average teams im my opinion . If tahj Boyd was in the draft that’s who I would want . This might sound funny but im speechless to say the least it feels like we are going to have a wasted draft wow Geno smith is not getting the credit he deserves . But we will see could be a smokescreen .

    • Chief Hokie

If we pick up Alex Smith and give up something like a second rounder for him you have to wonder if Dorsey and Reid are just plain clueless about the KC fanbase and our history with these second-rate FA QB’s.

  • Travis Forsyth

:( History tends to repeat itself and history is, the chiefs DON’T draft QB’s as their franchise guy at least not since the blackledge and fuller days……you can go down the line: Dawson, Kenney, DeBerg, Krieg, Montana, Bono, Gannon, Grbac, Green, Huard, Thigpen, Cassel, and now….gulp…..Alex Smith….. think I’m going to cry I was REALLY hoping for Geno Smith. :(

  • Adam Sherman

    If this is true…..

    Grreat.

If we choose not to take a QB #1 overall as a result of this I will be disgusted. The guy lost his job in the middle of the damn season, on a super bowl contender, to a 2nd year guy with zero game experience! It took 7 years and Jim Harbaugh’s badass-ness to get ANYTHING good out of him. Chiefs land a better smarter classier franchise’s backup quarterback, sounds familiar….. for the love of god Christ almighty we are going to do this allllll over again huh

    • Darkwolf1414

Not to mention the guy can’t stay healthy!

  • Danny W

Three weeks premature seems like a whole lot of smoking going on to me. It’s jumping the gun just a bit. That said if it’s true and Alex Smith is had for a third or lower, next year a conditional second or third, I’m giving it my blessing, second or higher this year, and I’m laughing at our new brass already.

    • Chief Hokie

I am really hoping we don’t give up more than a 4th rounder. I can’t imagine we’d already settle for a 3rd or higher considering there are still 3 more weeks before the guy can even be traded. Having said that, Alex Smith is the best FA QB out there (not counting Flacco), and if Reid and Dorsey really don’t see Geno as their guy then Alex Smith is our best short term option until we do find our guy. If we got Alex Smith, drafted Joekel, AND found a way to keep Bowe and Albert, I would be content.

  • Adam Sherman

I have never really been into sloppy seconds, know it’s weird but Iv always wanted to be the guy who picked up my very own pretty girl (kaepernick). Not some girl who just got dumped, isn’t over her ex boyfriend yet, emotionally unstable, and oh yea, she is a damn 5 !! at best!

  • Chief Hokie

Why not just resign Cassel? At least that would save us a draft pick.

    • http://www.facebook.com/katiri.taylor Katiri Taylor

Alex is a good qb,we can compete with him next year at least.

    • KCPauly

exactly if Reid is such a QB guru then he should do just as good with Cassel as Smith.

  • ArrowFan

This is not the Smith I was hopping to be reading about today.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JFGCC Fernando Garci-Crespo C

I like the move, please watch this interview of GENO. He looks a bit slow. And by that I mean dumb. Ill rather get Joeckel http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-combine/0ap2000000145023/Smith-making-his-case

  • NicholasAlanClayton

If we pick up A. Smith and Geno goes to the Oakland Raiders at #3 as their quarterback of the future, I might just puke. All over all of my Chiefs gear.

  • thisistheendoftheendof

what a waste. good bye chiefs. was a great 27 years.

    • KCPauly

No Kidding was a great 27yrs. without drafting a QB of our own…SOOOOOOO tired of retreads and retards.especially SF retreads…C’mon man here we go again…new rgime same ol’ shit alex smith sucks asshole

  • Darkwolf1414

I HATED the trade for Cassel. I thought he was a product of the New England system and the receivers made him look better than he was. I hope this trade isn’t true. At least the trade partner being KC. I suppose if you only gave up a 4th rounder it would settle a little. Right now, I feel the exact same way I felt when I heard about the trade for Cassel.

If the trade partner IS KC then we better draft Geno at #1, as well. Alex Smith has only been healthy for all 16 games TWICE in his 8 year career. The most games he started any other season was 10! We need a guy to play the other 6 games! If Alex Smith is the only “significant” QB we get this off season; remind me to cancel my NFL Sunday Ticket. I can’t bear to pay $360 to sit through the onslaught! I’ll just check the stats, periodically, on NFL.com. Checking the stats on NFL.com, for me, is like driving past a terribly bad car accident. You know you don’t want to look to see the mangled bodies but for some reason you do it anyway.

Ok, enough of the bitching. Grow up and quite whining. IF, let me state that word again, IF this is true, which it likely isn’t since they aren’t allowed to talk about such things before the new league year to my understanding, then the guy who was part of drafting Aaron Rodgers and the guy that made McNabb, Kolb and Foles look good have done what they apparently feel is best for the team to win now and to give them time to maybe do what we ALL have wanted them to do, develop their own QB draft prospect. It may be Geno or it may not be. I have said all along I don’t want Geno with the #1, but I am good with trading down and getting him in the middle of round 1, which I am convinced we can do. I don’t think Jacksonville, Oakland, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, Arizona, Buffalo, Jets, Tennessee, San Diego or Miami are going to take a QB with their first rounders. I know everyone thinks Oakland, Cleveland, Buffalo and especially Arizona will go after him, but they are wrong. Oakland is really high on Pryor and will give him a real shot to compete with Carson. Cleveland has Weeden AND McCoy and despite what the pundits are saying I think Norv Turner can turn them both around if need be. Buffalo could go for Geno, but I think they need a Mike Glennon, Ryan Nassib or Landry Jones to fit the offense they are likely to run. Let me say this before someone pulls the “you think they are better than Geno” crap, NO I do not, but I don’t think he fits what Buffalo will run this coming year. Arizona on the other hand needs Chance Warmack, Luke Joekel or Erik Fisher to shore up the offensive line or face it, NO QB will lasting long with this team. I honestly think that Bruce Arians can coach Kolb or Skelton up a lot better than their old coach could with that piece of crap line. So everyone needs to put down the alcohol, take a deep breath and get behind Alex, IF, he is going to be on this team. You don’t have to like it any more than I would have to like it if they actually waste a #1 overall for Geno. He is NOT worth it and that is even though I think he did great at the combine. You should only use the #1 on a QB if you think he can start RIGHT AWAY and I don’t think even Geno believes he is that guy. He needs time to develop. He does NOT need to be thrown into the season with all of us fans expecting or hoping he will do great! If we get him anywhere in the draft I don’t want him to be turned into the next David Carr because we needed a QB or new face of the franchise. IF we are getting Alex he gives a solid chance to win AND allows Geno to develop the right way, similar to how Aaron did in GB.

  • Michael Shaw

And has anyone noticed that NONE of this has been mentioned on KCCHIEFS.COM? Usually they would dispel a rumor such as this.

  • berttheclock

In the latest artcle at sfgate, the Chronicle writer mentions that Trent Dilfer, who hangs with the Niners in off season and is a good friend of Alex Smith, had said “Reid had been courting Smith last year when Smith was a FA”. So, it looks as though this is not something new for Reid. However, there still remains the question of Foles. Reid drafted him, trained him, and started him for the 7 games Vick missed.
Posters may complain about “suggested moves”, but, I really like the way both Dorsey and Reid appear to be keeping al options open until they need to deliver on various cuts to current Chiefs’ personnel, the start of free agency on and after March 12 and the upcoming draft. My attitude is, although, I am a trench warfare believer in both offensive and defensive lines, I trust this new management team and will defer to their collective judgment. Should they draft Geno or take someone else, fine with me I will continue to wear my very faded Chiefs’ visor. The Chiefs will grow and reap well the seeds sown by this new team of Dorsey/Reid.. Hey, I first walked into Muni in November ’63 and cheered for the team and I sat in the LA Coliseum to see what became known later as SB1. I will never jump ship. Better days are coming.

Give them Matt Cassel and a 4th round pick. Unlike Matt Cassel, Alex did play some downs in college football. If we trade for future picks make sure they are filled with incentives,I.e. if he lead the chiefs to the superbowl, then it turns into a second or first round pick!!!! After all, A. Smith is only 28.

  • chiefridgy

I guess we will be picking first again next year….

    • berttheclock

No, but, if it would happen, what is wrong with Clowney?

      • KCMikeG

Total stud but he doesn’t play QB. So are we going to wait until the 2nd round again next year for our “franchise” QB?

  • Justin Miller

I will wait and see if it is us and what we give up for him. Late round pick or conditional 2014 pick and I am alright with it as long as we select another QB in the 2nd or 3rd like Manuel, Nassib, Barkley or Wilson and let them learn in the wings. We cant have Alex Smith be the end all be all. Stop gap then I am good with that.

  • Mark

Any higher than a 4th and this would be terrible for KC.

  • jesse

i hope it IS us. think about it, if we trade a 4th or 5th, which is generally just depth talent, and get a quarterback that was playing VERY well with a suspect receiver corps, without having to pay him a huuuuuge amount of money, its a steal. nothing sayd we havee to keep him 7 years. draft a qb in the 2nd or 3rd, let him learn, get adjusted to tje nfl. best case, Smith leads us to the promise land. medium case, we average out, develop a quarterback whos a stud for years to come. worst case, they both suck, we get 1st pick in a good qb class down the road. Kcs problem was passing and run defense. Get a game manager (someone that gets it in playmakers hands with minimum turnovers) and we have a top 10 offense. Shore up the Defense in fre eagency and 2nd round maybe anf we will be a contender hands down. remember, cassel single handedly lost thhe ravens game for us. Get Alex Smith. Good investment.

    • ArrowFan

The problem is he is due what I think is 8.5 mill that is not cheap. Even if we cut MC that pays 7 mill of it. He will anything but cheap.

    • KCMikeG

Far from single handedly. Cassel had plenty of help from the total collapse of the interior OL (just like the faiders game the week before) and the terrible coaching that gave Charles 3 carries in the 2nd half. Just like the 9 carry game last year vs the faiders that RAC wasn’t even aware of after the game.

  • KCMikeG

I still don’t understand why Geno will not be a successful NFL QB? “He’s inconsistent”. I would gladly take inconsistency of 71% completion rate all year long. “He played weak defenses” So did Peyton Manning – 10 of the 16 games were against the bottom half of the NFL defenses. “He had some bad games”. Nobody’s perfect. Peyton threw 3 picks in one quarter costing them the game. Brady went 55% 1 TD/2 picks followed by 58% 2TD/2picks during the stretch run for the play offs last year.

We need a QB and Alex Smith isn’t the answer – alone. We better take Geno #1 as our insurance policy and sign AS? Why is it wrong to take a risk on GS? Aren’t we taking a risk on AS too? How often do QB’s that have had struggles, been cut and then found great success on their next team? Does AS have more upside than GS? No. Yet his price tag is much higher. What do we do with him next year when we draft Boyd or Manziel, or worse yet this year, if he can’t win the starting job but we just signed him for 3 years/$24M? What if we end up with another camp “competition” like we have had the last two years?

  • oldchiefsfan

Great!! Another cast-off reject. Remember when San Francisco dumped Grbac on us and he was supposed to be the ANSWER too? If he was so great why would they have benched him?

  • Zack Puh-Pow Beene

Alex Smith is a good qb… lol. id like to see him in Dallas.
