Chiefs Sign WR Mardy Gilyard

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent WR Mardy Gillyard. Gilyard posted about the signing on his Twitter account, though the team has yet to confirm.

Gilyard was selected 99th overall by the Rams in the 2010 NFL draft. He has since bounced from the Rams  to the Jets and the Eagles but  has failed to catch on.

Obviously Chiefs head coach Andy Reid saw something he liked in Gilyard during his time in Philly and has decided to give him a shot in KC.

Gilyard isn’t particularly fast, only running a 4.6 forty. He also sports poor size at 6-0, 187. Unless he is able to develop into a very precise route runner, he will likely to continue struggling at the NFL level.

The Chiefs are adding a lot of low end, developmental talent right now so I wouldn’t read took much into this move. Still, this could give us a peak into the kind of receivers Reid is interested in, which could be good news for Dexter McCluster.

Did any of you like Gilyard coming out of the draft?

never heard of him, but he looks like he can make pays

I liked Marty he was the type that could stretch the field. Hopefully this isn’t anything to do with Bowe.

    • boweisgone

its pretty hilarious that anyone would think it does. the team has issues at WR, and doesnt have a true possession guy, which is what marty would have to be to make it
the guy has 74 career rec yards. honestly, hes no threat to bowe.
bowe is gone. not sure why people havent noticed this yet

        Bowe is gone?

      • big chief

Saying Bowe is gone at this point is a guess and nothing more. Nobody knows. Bowe and the Chiefs probably don’t even know right now, but preach it Kreskin.

Gee, that must be some really good crystal ball you have. Let’s say the Chiefs let Bowe walk. Who do we get to replace him for less money than Bowe would command? Letting Bowe out of KC makes zero sense. The last thing that Andy Reid needs is another problem of his own creation. And that is what he would have if the Chiefs don’t sign there best wideout.

The Rams have been starved for receivers for a few years. Like the Chiefs, they had to depend on the running game. If he couldn’t make it on a team lacking at that position, then he is probably a practice squad guy.

I like the idea of throwing everything at the board and seeing what sticks. I think the top four things Kansas City really needs right now is Quarterback, Offensive Line, Cornerback and Wide Receiver. Obviously the easiest fix for wide receiver is to re-sign Bowe, but even with Bowe they still need at least one more wide receiver. I have little to no confidence in Baldwin at this point to even be a #2 receiver. Even if Bowe re-signed, he will continue to draw double coverage, so they need a legit #2 receiver. I think this is more important then a quarterback right now. What good is a quarterback if he doesn’t have anyone to throw to?

Don’t forget that we have Junior “big play” Hemmingway who will be a stud if he is given the chance.i look at all the receivers the same way that I do with Ricky Stanzi, we truly don’t know anything because the last regime were horrible at spotting and properly using talent

    • sharpie-mini92

A good qb with nobody to throw to can go a long way. Ever heard of peyton manning?

      • Elvis Grbac

Like when he had Brandon Stokely, Weggie Wayne, Marvin Harrison and Dallas Clark?

  • Chris Tarrants

Devon wylie, MCcluster,Bowe,Baldwin and breaston= one nice core of receivers if we can get a decent quarterback to lead them, this guy looks to just be a camp body and eventually practice squad

  • big chief

Gilyard was real good in college. Just hasn’t transferred well I guess.
