Chiefs Meet With Andy Reid For Over 9 Hours, According To Report

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Earlier today we told you that there were reports that the Kansas City Chiefs were in Philly interviewing former Eagles coach Andy Reid. Now we are hearing that the interview lasted at least nine hours.

And it may still be going on.

There is no indication from this tweet that the meeting has ended. In fact, the wording seems to indicated that it is still happening.

While I am sure these meeting can take some time, nine hours seems a little long. Remember, we heard last year that GM Scott Pioli’s interview with former Titans coach Jeff Fischer did not last very long at all.

If you are in the “hire Andy Reid” camp, this is good news. Reid is reportedly supposed to fly to Arizona tonight so he can interview with the Cardinals tomorrow. If the Chiefs are serious about hiring Reid, the only plane he’ll get on tonight will be Clark Hunt’s private jet back to Kansas City.

Mark Donovan and Pioli are also at the meeting. Donovan worked in the Eagles organization from 2002-2009 as the senior VP of operations. He is now the COO for the Chiefs and was likely brought along to help convince Reid to sign.

    Oh snap!

  • sidibeke

So, Paddy, are you in the hire Andy Reid camp?

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

I absolutely am. Proven, consistent winner.

      • obrien5

definitely! Now I’ve heard rumors if he went to KC he would bring Vick? True Idk? But he would be an upgrade and we could use the first pick on my boy Mante Te’o!

        • Stacy D. Smith

Gaaaaaah! No! You can’t draft an ILB #1. I want Geno!

          • clownose

Vick is garbage! I can’t believe anyone would want him. We need a rookie QB and yes Geno is my front runner but if you think Vick will help thus team win you are dreaming. I get he can’t do worst then what we have/had but come on Vick?

          • Stacy D. Smith

Wrong guy. I don’t want any parts of Mike Vick.

          • sidibeke

Vick is why Philly is where they are now, and why Reid is on the market. I’m with you Stacy.

          • Joe Myers

your smoking crack you think vick won’t come in and stomp ass your tripin bring in vick draft tahj Boyd f Geno Boyd is a sleeper ried and his quarterback coaching staff and the chiefs will go linch mode on um

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1153552269 Rocco Stramaglia

you would be garbage too with that o line in philly. I have never been a huge vick fan especially the way he carries the ball like a loaf of bread and fumbles constantly, but you must admiit when Vick was playing well he was pretty explosive and with the weapons that the chiefs have on offense he could really excel in KC

          • obrien5

Love Geno! Don’t get me wrong, just love my Irish and he’s a hell of a leader! But yeah qb first.

          • Larry Devore

apparently you missed his great Pinstripe Bowl perfomance

          • Stacy D. Smith

The one where the threw for 2 TD’s, 0 INT’s, and completed 67% of his passes? Nah. I did see the one where Syracuse racked up 360+ yards on the ground and had the ball for 12 more minutes in the TOP battle. Who knew Geno played defense?

      • http://www.facebook.com/jasonfseibel Jason Seibel

Plus KC’s sideline has been missing a bushy year round stache!

      • toperspective

No concern with how the Eagles performed the last two years? He was 66-61-1 since making the Super Bowl after the 2004 season, and he
was 12-20 in his last two years in charge in Philadelphia.

        • KCMikeG

Thanks for noticing. We have already tried the he WAS great approach.

          • toperspective

At least he is not a proven failure like Crennel. Some of his sideline decisions are pretty baffling. I’d rather they go in a different direction but I wouldn’t puke over it. But if Pioli is staying and if he has any personnel decision making power, then I don’t think it matters who the HC is.

          • sidibeke

            Who was that?

          • KCMikeG

RAC had the rings to prove he was great. Dick Vermeil had a ring and while his offenses were great the best we had under him was one and done in the playoffs.

          • sidibeke

But RAC never had success as an HC. As for Vermeil, I’d take those teams right about now…but damn the D’s were infuriating!

  • steve james

At this point any proven coach will do. It is going to be a long off season.

  • Stacy D. Smith

Hopefully they never let him get on that plane. Arizona has already met their Rooney Rule requirement. They can hire him the moment he steps through the door.

    • Jim Harper

      So has KC

      • Stacy D. Smith

That won’t matter when he hops a flight to Arizona. This may be our one and only shot at hiring him.

  • Jim Harper

Not my first choice. I really wanted Kelly. Fresh blood with new ideas and take advantage of all the offensive weapons at his disposal. Also to address a post earlier. Fired coaches do not get to bring players with them.

    • Larry Devore

You forgot one thing, the lack of a quality QB.

    • toperspective

You would think they would at least talk to Kelly.

  • Brady Warshawsky

I could jump on the Andy Reid train. With a number 1 overall pick, it could get good. Who would be his O and D Cordinators? Also… Anyone check out that Aaron Murray kid from Georgia? I hope he declares… He looks good!

    • sidibeke

I’m pretty sure Murray said he’s staying.

      • tdubb24

Andy Murray = Brody Croyle … and that came from a Georgia fan when I asked his opinion of Murray. NO FREAKIN THANKS!!

  • Joe Myers

tahj Boyd looked great agenst lsu and he was harrased the entire game im ok with ried I want John gruden he’s a great QB coach but Boyd looks to me to be the sleeper among this years QB

    • KCMikeG

Dead on the mark. He is the real deal!

      • Chiefswatch

now if we can just get Cassel locked up for another five years with Reid he would be in pro bowl form huh Mike?

  • http://twitter.com/skymuscle83 Skylor Kingrey

No to Andy Reid!!! Why are you wanting a NFL Retread Clark??? I said when people got on the Romeo bandwagon it was a bad idea and I’m telling you and people now DO NOT HIRE REID!!!! Go after a Head Coach who can make a name here not a NFL retread!!! Come on Clark. No to Reid!!!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jason-McQuitty/100002372689145 Jason McQuitty

They already tried that with Haley?

    • jon dundore

There’s a big difference in the track record of Andy Reid and Romeo Crennel. Although Reid isn’t my first choice, he’s consistently gotten the eagles to the playoffs and had some ridiculous streak of like 5 or 6 straight NFC championship games. Crennel hasn’t ever gotten it done at head coach. Never made the playoffs once. The last two years in Philly have been pretty bad, but sometimes having the same coach for too long can be bad. I think Reid could be a good coach for the Chiefs.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Bill Bellichick was an NFL retread hen the Pats hired him. Drew Brees was a retread QB. How you get the talent is irrelevant as long as you get the talent.

  • Lyle Graversen

I still want Chip Kelly, but Reid is my 2nd choice so I’d be good with it. Our passing game needs help and he’s a passing game guy. I like the idea of Reid and Geno Smith. He would just need an offensive coordinator that would remind him to use JC and a good 3-4 DC, but preferably a more attacking 3-4 as opposed to the 2-gap system we are running now.

Perfect world, Reid interviews w/ Arz thurs, we interview Chip on Friday, they both like KC and we pick the one we like better.

    • Jim Harper

      I am with you Lyle!

    • Danny W

I don’t even think Chip Kelly is on the radar according to reports. Cleveland, Buffalo and Philly all have interviews lined up but not KC.

      • sidibeke

I don’t think Clark wants to take a chance this go…He wants an NFL-experienced HC who has won. Can’t say I blame him.

        • Chief Hokie

Agreed. Especially if hunt is giving the new hc a ton of power over personnel and letting him run the show.

  • Lyle Graversen

Wow, Philly reporter just said Reid didn’t fly to Arz after KC meeting like he originally planned. Either Reid was tired after being grilled all day and decided to go in the morning, or we may have ourselves a new coach.

    • Lyle Graversen

SaveOurChiefs now tweeting that Reid and KC and still negotiating into the night. I don’t know what their source is or how credible that report is, but if true I think we might be getting close to having our new coach.

      • Lyle Graversen

They are sighting Fox 29 out of Philly and respected Philly sports reporter Howard Eskin who Paddy sighted in this post. They say contract talks “are heating up”.

        • Lyle Graversen

So after watching the news report online, I didn’t see anything that said they were continuing into the night. It was from about 5pm our time. Still, sounded like things were pretty serious between them.

          • sidibeke

I read a report that Clark and Reid exchanged id bracelets.

          • Lyle Graversen

Better off just bringing him a sampler from all the great BBQ places in KC and a custom made monogrammed KC Chiefs handkerchief to wipe his mustache.

          • sidibeke

Ohh. I’m in CO; I could use one of those samplers myself.

          • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

Last I heard was from a bit after 10 that said Reid wanted to talk to his wife, and that he wasn’t going to AZ and may go to SD but not sure

      • sidibeke

        Ah, they’re Winstoning him.

My guess is, we get Reid, Bowe stays.

        • Lyle Graversen

I don’t know, I can see it, but as I already said I think going after Mike Wallace in FA makes some sense.

        • tdubb24

I was thinkin the same thing!!! Although Winston turned out to be a big ole clucker!

          • sidibeke

I think the whole team played down this year. That’s on the coach. Winston didn’t all of a sudden forget how to block. With the right leader (coach) and an even halfway decent QB, I think the whole O will look quite different.

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1153552269 Rocco Stramaglia

Winston played fine, he had a few rough games where he played poorly but overall he was a tremendous improvement to the oline. Just imagine how bad the oline wouldve been without him because when the starting center went down and lilja had to play center for the first time in his career, alot of changes had to be made to that line including starting 2 rookies Stephenson and Jeff Allen.

      • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

If I were you I wouldn’t put any stock into Saveourchiefs info or the credibility of their sources.

  • ArrowFan

I would rather see someone else but he would be a definate improvement. Why is Puckoli even there?

    • sidibeke

My guess is that he is sort of interviewing to keep his job.

      • toperspective

Hmm. You would think Hunt would have seen enough over the past 4 years to end the interview early.

        • sidibeke

My take is that they’re trying on the Pioli as “right hand man” role. If Pioli and Reid agree they can work together, I’m okay with Pioli staying. I think he’s done a good job of building the roster, with the glaring, and arguably unforgivable, exception of QB. Honestly, I don’t want Reid or Pioli making decisions on their own, but it could work if they can do these together.

          • toperspective

I’d differ on the roster since they were 2-14. And the lack of a QB is unforgivable. Since he was apparently drafting development guys last year perhaps he could have drafted a development QB…maybe Cousins or Wilson, perhaps? The fact that he thought Cassel and Quinn were going to be good enough in 2012 leads me to the conclusion that he is clueless.

          • sidibeke

Can’t agree with you on the logic that the roster isn’t good because of a 2-14 record. By itself, that is not proof, and the fact the KC has 5 pro-bowlers (albeit, only 1 from Pioli’s era, but he did sign two of the others to l-t deals) and additional talent (e.g., Flowers, not Pioli but did sign him), he did sign Winston (down year but best T on the market) and Boss. He drafted Houston. I haven’t made my mind up about Poe, but he doesn’t seem a bust at any rate…
As for the QB, I agree with you. Missing on that is huge and his ability to hire good coaches (or be able to work with them) are certainly grounds for his firing. As it is, however, if we sign Reid, I might be okay if Pioli is around. He won’t have the control he’s had in the past, and if he and Reid can work together, I trust that they combined can do a good job of evaluating talent. If Pioli goes, I won’t shed a tear, thought. Hell, I wanted him to be fired mid-season.

          • toperspective

I think as fans we tend to overrate our roster. The offense was wretched and the defense wasn’t anything to write home about. Ranked 20th. I know having a lousy offense puts a lot of pressure on the D but that’s not the only reason they stunk. They gave up 30+ points seven times. “I trust that they combined can do a good job of evaluating talent” – you are a more trusting guy than I am. I have no faith in Pioli to do anything other than keep the stairwells clear of trash.

          • sidibeke

You could very well be right.

  • Lyle Graversen

Random thoughts on if Reid is hired:

    1. I think Geno Smith is definitely the #1 pick

    2. I can see Reid letting Bowe leave if Mike Wallace hits FA as expected. He seems like a natural fit for Reid’s offense. AND I think they could take another WR at the top of the 2nd round. (Reunite Geno with his HS and college teammate Stedman Bailey?)

    3. The thought of Reid leading a Geno Smith passing attack with Wallace (or Bowe), a 2nd round pick, McCluster, Wylie, Moeaki (and Boss if he comes back), and Charles actually catching the ball out of the backfield for once sounds like a LOT of fun.

    • sidibeke

Don’t forget, we do have Breaston and Baldwin, too. I don’t think Baldwin has to be a bust, and Breaston can play. Everyone just needs a QB and someone to light a fire under them, get them playing as a team and up to their potential.

      • Chiefswatch

Yea we truly do not know the capabilities of any of our WR talent. For they all have been stuck with shit talent like Cassel, Palko, Quinn, Huard, and Thigpen throwing them the ball.

  • Lyle Graversen

Just read that Reid has more playoff wins as a HC than KC has in the history of their NFL franchise. I realize that the guy has his faults, but that fact right there should shut up any critics if the Chiefs make this hire.

    • Chiefswatch

No they would rather get some hot OC or DC because they seem to be all the rage of late in the NFL. Oh you want examples? Well how about Todd Haley, Romeo Crennel, and Josh McDaniels to name a few. Way better than Coaches that had great success before but slumped a little before getting fired by that team…John Fox for instance. …

      • toperspective

Or perhaps Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin. Basically every good coach was a hot OC or DC at some point. Crennel was a rejected HC. He was clueless in Clev and he was clueless in KC. Reid would probably be a good hire but I sure can understand the trepidation some have with bringing in a coach that didn’t do such a hot job the last couple of seasons. Every situation is different.

        • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

Actually Bilichick was a rejected head coach as well, he was fired by the Browns/Ravens from his head coach job in 1996.

          • toperspective

True. My point was that prior HC success isn’t necessarily a key factor. Few HC coaches are successful in one location, are fired and are successful in another location. Parcells, Holmgren, Reeves, Vermeil. It seems by the time a successful coach gets fired, he is past his prime.

          • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

Marty was successful to an extent in Cleveland, KC, and SD

          • toperspective

True. Marty’s teams always played hard and were competitive.

  • http://powellbailbonds.weebly.com/ big chief

I’m unsure how I feel about Reid. He was great for 5-6 years but has been pretty cold for 8 or so. Maybe a fresh start would be good. There would at least be hope. The second I heard Romeo was hired as HC I called for disaster (got a lot of disagreement from AA staff) and boom. Reid at least has proven he’s an NFL head coach. I would bet if he is hired Pioli is gone. Reid wouldn’t go to work under a dictator after being HC and GM both.

  • Chiefswatch

The most depressing news is that shit bag Pioli was allowed to go and talk with him. I am telling you that Clark fed us a bunch of shit in regards to Pioli and his new role with the team.

    • toperspective

      Sure sounds that way.

    • http://twitter.com/biglump007 Leon Ritz

I believe I read Hunt and Donavan are leading the search, just because Pioli is there doesn’t mean he is actually doing any interviewing or making any decisions

  • drtold

Reid is my first choice, next Gruden, then Lovie (Lovie, Romeo, I don’t like names like that, lol). If Hunt can’t get either of those three, he needs to let Pioli make another hire. Someone had to say it, so I did.

  • drtold

    Btw, doesn’t Reid use a 4-3 defense?

  • James Denton

Question Chiefs fans. If Reid Comes to KC it has been rumored he will bring along with him Brad Childress, and I believe Pat Schurmer (sp) Good Choices or bad? 2nd it has been also rumored that if Reid takes the job he will draft a QB and also bring in Mcnabb for a year while grooming the new QB good choice or bad?
Here’s my take on the staff I’m kinda in the middle on that! As far as everything else I say take a look at free agency and see who’s available, but I truly see Reid going after Kevin Colb in Arizona before Mcnabb, Trade down in the draft but still take a quality QB lower in the 1st or early 2nd round, fill the rest of our gaps and depth in free agency and the draft, and get some quality backup QB’s just in case something happens! And please take care of our own players we need to keep during free agency as well!!! What do you think Chiefs Fans? P.S. the fans have Mr. Hunt where they want him! We hold the cards and I truly believe that his pocket book will be wide open this year as he doesn’t want to lose what his father worked so hard to build up! Your thoughts on this as well?
