Will Scott Pioli Be Fired This Week?

The Kansas City Chiefs turned in yet another underwhelming performance Thursday night against the San Diego Chargers, dropping them to 1-7 on the season.

Does the new low spell the end for Chiefs GM Scott Pioli?

Some might tell you that it doesn’t make sense to fire a GM in the middle of the season but I vehemently disagree. I think it can be very advantageous to cut ties, especially if Clark Hunt already knows who his replacement is going to be. It makes even more sense if the replacement is available to start work immediately.

The Carolina Panthers just fired their GM after a 1-5 start so cutting ties mid-season isn’t unheard of. The Cleveland Browns have also begun making major changes, inserting their new president before Mike Holmgren was officially off the job.

I’ve no doubt that if Clark Hunt is going to make a move that he is going to do it carefully. He will likely have a solid game plan in place if and when he decides to pill the plug on Pioli.

If Hunt decide he wants to make a move mid-season, this would be the week to do it. The Chiefs don’t play another game for ten days when they travel to Pittsburgh for the Todd Haley Revenge Bowl.

In the end, Hunt may have no choice. Chiefs fans are livid and have been for some time. They want Pioli out and they want to know that Hunt is committed to winning. If anything, removing Pioli now would at least let fans know that change is on the way, even if more wins this season are not.

What do you think, Addicts? Should Clark fire Pioli now or wait until the end of this miserable season?

Would not hurt but would it do any good – no clue of any kind of help any where.

    • Jonathan Aldridge

it might, u never know. our best bet is to go ahead and do it

    • Chief Hokie

The only thing we know for sure is that the current Pioli regime aint getting it done.

  • Danny W

Yes just because he should be pissed off enough at this teams performance. Tyson Jackson was his very first pick, that should have given Clark a clue. He should have seen this coming when Cassel was still starting four years in. You don’t get to go through two hand picked coaches and have to fire them mid season in back to back years and that’s exactly what should happen and soon.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shannon.michael.thompson Shannon Thompson

He should be just to show the fans that somethings going to change!

  • Jeremy Parkercom

“The Kansas City Chiefs turned in yet another underwhelming performance Thursday night against the San Diego Chargers”, before the game is over, meanwhile it continued to get even worse, Lol! Anyway, yes I agree with you, that it would be to our advantage to go ahead and let him go asap. And I will be praying tonight that I wake up to the good news.

  • Chiefswatch

29 giveaways mid season, a 1-7 record, the worst QB situation in the league, zero positives, fan’s flying banners over the stadium…..no reason to expect Pioli to be fired.

    • Danny W

He must have some photos of Clark in bed with a fat Trannie or something man. He’s got leverage of some kind, because in no way does he keep his job on any other team.

    • Chief Hokie

I’m thinking he should get an extension

  • BWrangler

I’m not convinced that this organization does anything carefully or with a solid game plan. Just throw some crap against the wall and see what sticks. My coworkers don’t even razz me anymore, it’s a doggone pity party these days.

  • Lyle Graversen

I don’t see how Clark can do nothing. His company is spiraling out of control. The entire country is mocking his biggest money maker. Even if all he cares about is money, he still needs to do something.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

      Time to make the change.

  • Adam Best

Our highway to the No. 1 pick is a clearer path than Will Svitek used to provide to the QB.

    • Lyle Graversen

I see your Will Svitek and raise you a Chris Terry and Barry Richardson.

      • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

I see your Svitek and Richardson and raise you a Damian McIntosh.

        • Merlin_Arrowhead_Addict

I’ll cover your McIntosh and raise you a Trezelle Jenkins!

          • KCMikeG

Stop it you guys I’m getting dizzy!

          • Danny W

            Jordan Black?

      • Matt Finucane

I think Christ Terry was actually our worst lineman ever.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

A rare content from one of AA’s founders. You know things are bad folks.

    • KCMikeG

That’s who I was thinking of watching Stephenson whiff 100% on the end zone strip sack TD and then he doesn’t even get on the ball.

  • http://www.facebook.com/curt.frisch Curt Frisch

I’ve never been so embarrassed or angry to be a Chiefs fan. Not only did this team play another dismal game tonight, they are embarking on one of the most historically inept seasons any NFL team has EVER HAD. Clark, you’ve got to clean house. Pioli, Crennel and Daboll are clueless. Retain #25 and purge the rest. Time for a clean slate, starting with a regime change NOW. Show us fans that you aren’t going to sit back and watch your father’s proud franchise continue to be the laughingstock of the league. PULL THE TRIGGER.

    • Jonathan Aldridge

dont tell us that tell hunt that

      • http://www.facebook.com/curt.frisch Curt Frisch

If I had a direct channel to Mr. Hunt, I wouldn’t hesitate to do so. Instead, I’m relegated to posting my frustrations in forums like these while crossing my fingers that Clark cares enough to read them. Likely not, but one can only hope. :-)

    • Keewuang

AMEN to that!! Well said Curt!

    • tm1946

Upset – just wait until the MNF against Pitts with Haley as OC, worse is coming.

  • Guest

Romeo live “we put ourselves in this situation and the only way we get out is to find our way out” RAC must be a Rhodes scholar

  • wildtrent

I’m done…and have been for a few games. I can’t get behind a team that can’t score, can’t cover, keep keep the ball in their hands. Changes need to happen. And happen fast.

  • Jeremy Parkercom

Quick question fellow addicts, was it just me or did anyone else think that pioli paid the announcers in tonights game to hang on Cassel’s nuts? I heard excuse after excuse for Cassel all night long, like they were trying to help ease the fans negativity toward him or something.

    • http://www.facebook.com/curt.frisch Curt Frisch

I was too busy watching Crennel look lost while we turned the ball over at a record pace to listen to the commentators, but if I had to guess, they were trying to make a national audience believe this game was watchable.

      • Jeremy Parkercom

Lol, Yeah, Crennel is beyond inept as a head coach.

    • http://www.arrowheadaddict.com Patrick Allen

Cassel played just fine tonight. Not great but not bad.

      • http://www.facebook.com/curt.frisch Curt Frisch

Ummm, yeah I suppose he’s played worse, but I would stop short of saying “not bad”. Any other QB who overthrows receivers like he did, loses a fumble in the endzone and throws a pick would certainly call this a bad game.

        • http://www.facebook.com/adam.sherman.750 Adam Sherman

No kidding, I’m kinda tired of some chiefs fans sticking up for Cassel just because they think it’s a different take so it’s cool. He’s awful hanging receiver’s out three sheets to the wind over the middle every single play. He can not throw outside of the hashmarks. Do Not care or want the one throw in the fourth quarter to be brought up either, whoopdie doo.

        • Chiefswatch

It appears are expectations are so low for this piece of shit that anything short of three turnovers and he played an OK game!

      • http://twitter.com/aharp31 Big Jim

Jesus Paddy! Both Cassel’s turnovers turned into TD’s! How does any of that equate to Cassel playing fine?

        • KCMikeG

Come on Big Jim. That was a perfectly thrown ball to McCluster and he let it go right through his hands. Stephenson let the LB come untouched on Cassels blind side on the other play. PLENTY of other places to lay the blame than Matt tonight. PLENTY.

          • Chief Hokie

That fumble in the endzone was on Cassel. Sure Stephenson blew it, but that’s what the short dump-off throws are meant for. He saw that Jarrett Johnson had broken through the line and instead of getting rid of the ball immediately he attempted to escape the pressure. He had no shot at outrunning the defensive end, no shot at completing a pass off the rollout, and he didn’t secure the ball after he turned his back on the guy. What was his plan??

          • micah stephenson

Then its “Cassel throws too many check downs”

          • Chief Hokie

Not in that situation. Not when you have 2-3 seconds to throw the ball before giving up a safety or a TD.

          • KCMikeG

I get what you are saying and agree on the check down excuse. But the fact is that an unabated DL can cover 40 yards in 5 or 6 seconds. No way Cassel had 2-3 seconds to do anything but try to run for his life. If Stephenson had slowed Johnson at all Cassel could have tried to find someone to get the ball to or if he had gotten out of pocket he could have thrown it away. I’m hanging this one on Stephenson. Plus he couldn’t even fall on the ball to prevent the TD.

      • Chiefswatch

Wow man. Nothing indicates he played “fine”….. Seriously man, because he wasn’t responsible for four turnovers then he played ok? His QBR was 68. Compare that Rivers who was 125 without Meachum. And this is a San Diego squad that managed to hang just 6 on the Browns. Cassel loses another fumble getting sacked….Did anyone notice that Quinn was not sacked against Tampa Bay? Is it really so much on the OLine as the idiot behind it? Was it me or did he overthrow wide open receivers tonight? If we are lucky though they will trot Cassel out there the next game and the next and the next. Fast track to the number one pick

        • KCMikeG

Rivers performance was his best of the entire year by leaps and bounds and that speaks plenty more about our DB’s than it does Phyllis 12/14 freak of nature game.

      • Derek Jamison

Were you drunk during the game?

    • Chief Hokie

It seemed to me like they wanted to sound original and against the grain of popular thought. They know he’s bad and that he’s always criticized by the media so they went into this game looking for something fresh and edgy to say when in reality they probably think Cassel is garbage.

    • KCMikeG

Mike Meyocks is one of the most intelligent and knowledgeable analysts in the business. Call them excuses if it makes you feel better but the truth is they were fact supported statements. And I believe the Cassel experiment will end this year so I’m not sticking up for him in hopes for his future. It is just the reality of this one night. Plenty of others to share the blame that deserve it. Besides your supposition is ridiculous because Pioli is a cheap skate – no way he pays..

      • micah stephenson

Thats y I quit taking up 4 Cassel. While Cassel is QB all blame will be put on him. Put Quinn back in so we dont hav to put up wit this “its all cassels fualt”

  • Jonathan Aldridge

im not worried about pioli as long as we get crennel out

    • http://twitter.com/aharp31 Big Jim

No, it all starts with Pioli. Make Zorn the temp HC, and allow Romeo to remain as DC if he will accept the downgrade. Probably allow Daboll to remain as well since there is no time to install a new offensive system. Then you have the entire second half of the season to fill your positions.

      • micah stephenson

HELL KWAW!!!! Jim Zorn sucks! Every QB he is around sucks! Cassel, Quinn, Stanzi all got worse with him coaching them. Joe Flacco also seems to b playing better without Zorn. The defense has sucked this yr and thats on Romeo. Romeo, Daboll, Zorn all need to b fired asap!!!

        • DoubleD

          Good points Micah.

        • Chiefswatch

Wow who knew you could have legit analysis…

          • micah stephenson

            Lol :)

      • Jonathan Aldridge

zorn has never been successful at any coaching job, so i would say emmit thomas would be the better temp hc, and crennel prob wont wanna accept a downgrade

  • Daniel Mayfield

Well, if firing Pioli wouldn’t do something to at least move the team forward, it would make the fans happier and get more attention from them. Hunt needs to make a move and it would be better to do it now! We lost to a team that the Browns beat last week! We have the lowest record in the NFL. If Hunt cares, he needs to do something to fix it

  • Chris turner

Clark Hunt is a Shit*ty owner. Scott Pioli is AWFUL,he might be the worst general manager in the NFL. Scott needs to be fired immediately. There is no doubt about it this coaching staff is the worst in the league. They need to be removed of all their duties immediately.

Please Clark go get Marc Ross of the New York Giants to be the teams new General Manager. Pioli was just a fraud.

Lamar Hunt would be ashamed of the direction this team is in under his son Clark. Were A joke of a franchise no leads in any games this year. This team may be a bigger loser than the 0-16 lions of a few years ago.

    • Chief Hokie

Yea I’m pretty sure the Lions at least led a game!

  • ChiefsFanSince69

Len Dawson: “I have never seen a team this bad in all my years of being in football and media work. This team is awful and unacceptable.” Do you realize how long Len Dawson has been in football?!! Again: “I have NEVER seen a team this bad…” We need D-I-S-C-I-P-L-I-N-E…We need M-A-R-T-Y…NOW!!

  • http://twitter.com/skymuscle83 Skylor Kingrey

yes he should fire Pioli and Crennel midseason. Tomorrow they should be fired!! I still can’t believe Crennel hasn’t already been fired!! hell I’m still pissed he was hired to start with!!! I said from the beginning that Haley was a good Coach!! it’s Pioli!!! Now we have a bad GM and Bad Head Coach in Crennel!! We are totally inept as a team!!!

    • Chief Hokie

I always thought Haley was good too and was sad to see him become the scapegoat of Pioli’s incompetence. Just about the only thing that could reignite the fan base now would be if Hunt went out and got Cowher, but it’s really hard to see him coming out of retirement for a team like the Chiefs after he’s already shot down so many offers.

  • Matt Finucane

This is really something. Worst Chiefs team ever?

    • http://twitter.com/aharp31 Big Jim

      Definitely

    • Danny W

Far and away the worst I’ve ever seen.

    • Chiefswatch

Definitely worse than Herm’s team of first and second year players.

      • Matt Finucane

I feel like I was madder during the Herm years though. I guess maybe because every game was accompanied by a press conference in which he lied and made excuses. Crennel just stands up there seeming old and tired. Easier to pity.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shannon.michael.thompson Shannon Thompson

Its just been an all around bad week for me, this is the icing on the cake! Hopefully tomorrow sometime there will be news flooding the net to whoever cares anymore that this dud named Pioli is out of a job, ship him back to NE for a box of girlscout thin mints! I’m not even sure if he’s worth that!

  • http://twitter.com/skymuscle83 Skylor Kingrey

If I did my job as bad as what pioli and Crennel do theirs, I’d be fired without mercy!!! as it should be!!! Hunt pull the plug!! fire Pioli and Crennel, they are one and the same!!!

  • http://twitter.com/aharp31 Big Jim

There are going to be several new GM’s next year so it would be wise to begin our search early and beat some others to the punch.

    • KCMikeG

Any ideas on who will wander into this shit hole of a hornets nest that won’t just make things worse?

  • Chief Hokie

I’m starting to wonder if remaining a Chiefs fan at this point is less like loyalty and more like sadism.

  • redchiefs

Time to let Mo or Zorn either call the offense or be the Head Coach? Time to put Stanzi in the rest of the year with Tanney as back up? Time for all the season ticket holders to stay home, and dont sell those tickets, let the stadium sit empty

    • KCMikeG

Please, please, please don’t feel your tickets to our opponents. The only way this gets any worse is if we have lost JC and if we are ridiculed and out numbered in Arrowhead. Give them to the Boys and Girls Clubs or the YMCA or any good cause. Stay home and print them out and burn them in your grill. Anything but contribute to the further humiliation of this colossal disaster. Please.

  • KCMikeG

i know the point of the post is to fire Pioli and I see some of the blame falling on Hunt, RAC and Daboll but across the board it seems like Cassel is nearly the only player I here people calling out. Why are we sparing the ones responsible for their play on the field? Plus with so many players not performing on the field it is RAC’s job to bench them and start someone else and that is NOT happening. RAC goes NOW and then we see we go from there based on the next few games. Zorn couldn’t do any worse. NO ONE else is going to want to walk into this cluster fuck chaos of a shit storm.

    • Chiefswatch

No position is as critical as the QB that is why. Besides Dex may have played like shit tonight but does he consistently play like a retard? Does Bowe consistently fumble when contact is made? No but Cassel does on both accounts. People succeed with shit positional players all the time, what they cannot do is play with a shit QB. So the scrutiny is understood and warranted IMO

    • DoubleD

Mike, when bad execution is systemic throughout an organization, it is due to faulty leadership. I’m not talking about RAC or Cassel either. What we’re witnessing is something deeper which goes far beyond the performance of players and coaches.

      • KCMikeG

I get what you’re saying but none of the players we have acquired had a history of turnovers. Plus nothing goes past the players when it comes to our greatest weakness – turnovers. They are the ones tipping and dropping balls. The next in line is the coaching staff for the game plan and ability to make adjustments. Our talent level is not our biggest problem except at QB.

  • Kyle Waggener

If I were Clark Hunt, MAJOR changes in the front office and coaching staff would have been made during the bye week. It was PAINFULLY clear back then that things were not going to get any better with the guys in charge now.

  • Roger Mihalko

The question should have already been answered by Clark Hunt, he should have done it during by week. YES he should by the morning, this game highlights the complete discontinuity the team has. Crennel and Daboll are over their head, and all should be gone by tomorrow midday.

The Qb Situation needs to get resolved quickly also, some veteran they can call to get some change going just for the end of the season.

  • Krans

I think Romeo is the problem, good coordinator but not a HC apparently. I don’t think we can consider Pioli’s drafting terrible minus the Tyson Jackson debacle year in which he basically came in during the offseason.

I’m torn, on one hand maybe it needs to be blown up, on the other I don’t want to rebuild from scratch again. At this point I’d can Romeo, find a legit head coach, DRAFT a QB and then give Pioli a few more years

    • DoubleD

No thank you. I’ve seen enough of Pioli’s drafts and free agency acquisitions (or lack thereof) to not want him picking a QB at the top of the draft. In fact, there’s plenty of reason to suspect that his pick for the #1 QB would be somebody that the experts and everybody else concludes is a 3rd round prospect at best. Pioli’s personnel moves remind me a guy who thinks he’s smarter than everybody else when in reality he’s too smart by half. You see, this is actually the best argument for why he should be fired now. The less influence he has on scouting the better off we’ll be and that honestly can’t happen soon enough.

      • DoubleD

Also, if you believe Romeo is the problem, then you must also look to the guy who selected him to be the head coach. Between coaching distasters, busted drafts, unproductive free agency acquisitions, inability to interest/acquire talent through free agecy, and loss of talented players to free agency, Pioli’s track record as a personnel man is that of utter failure and unmitigated disaster. The voters (fans) have spoken, the results are in, and Clark Hunt is now faced with but two options, regime change or revolution.

        • http://twitter.com/Krans24 Keane Santos

I realize my position is a very unpopular one, and I understand the flip side of the coin. I think we can all agree that at the time Romeo seemed to be a great candidate for the HC seat but he obviously has fell short of that row.

Have we really drafted terribly? Berry, Lewis, Houston, etc, Verdict is still out on this past season’s draft class.

I would have loved a QB last year but look we weren’t getting Luck or RG3, I honestly think the Chiefs entertained a trade up scenario but look what the Redskins gave up we obviously didn’t make an offer like that. Plus not pursuing a QB? did we not pursue Manning?

And funny how we all criticize Free Agency yet during the offseason we pretty much all agreed on this site that Winston was our top priority, and we got him. We filled Carr’s absense with Routt (obviously not the same, but nevertheless another move that seemed right).

I still strongly believe it’s the coaches. Pioli hasn’t been perfect but I’m not ready to blow it up with no logical replacement in place.

  • Keewuang

I say fire pioli NOW!!! Whats the worse that can happen?? Its obvious we (the fans) are tired of supporting losers! I would like to see Clark Hunt reach out to Marty Schottenheimer for the GM position. Marty was the BEST I’ve seen in Kansas City when it came to discovering talent. Now I understand as a coach he may have not gotten the job done completely with titles. We at least was always a play or two away from the big dance. And was favorite to win the west every year he coached.

  • ArrowFan

Don’t forget to give Clarks sister and two brother a phone call as well

  • Greg Stewart

    Fire his ass now!!!!

  • Jeff Crofford

Fire Pioli & the whole coaching staff. RAC looked completely lost last night.
The players clearly are not prepared to play.

  • AZKCFan

People can keep blaming Cassel (I certainly do) but at what point can we say our defense is terrible. I am tired of this two gap 3-4. Clearly we can’t run it. I am tired of Berry being a cover corner instead of a Safety. I am tired of watching 2 people get after the QB (Houston/Hali) while the rest of the people play some sort of Zone and let everyone run free. NO HEART.

    • Travis Forsyth

hmmmm. you raise a point. i wonder how much better our defense would be if we ran the 4-3..

    • KCMikeG

I agree except that from what I could see Houston was dropping into coverage more than he was rushing for some reason. While his coverage skills are already better than Hali he is still better utilized rushing the QB.

  • Travis Forsyth

win the 1st overall pick first, then fire pioli.

  • Kansas_City

Remarkable fall from grace for Pioli. But I think he is now dead man walking, with the bad luck of two prime time games for his final deminse. I guess if he is a jerk as reported, justice reigns.
I think Paddie is right. If you have the guy picked to replace Pioli, move on. If not, then it is a matter of whether you can effectively search for the new guy with Pioli on board. I doubt it, so you might as well get an interim GM on board and start the world’s best search for a replacement.

  • Doc

Wait a minute, hold the phone. You are confusing the Hunt family with facts. They can’t absorb and comprehend that fact that this team sucks. Quote the stats all you want, Clark is under a spell just like back in the day when the magician or the head religious leader was in the king’s ear. Pioli is in Clark’s ear telling him how great he will become and how fabulous his team looks in their talent and skills. When the season crashes down and there are not tickets sold next year, Pioli will slink off to the next team to dismantle them from within – the NE way. Remember the video tape charges? Well what better way to keep other teams from challenging you than to send out your minions (McDaniles – but he had to be brought back to NE for mroe training, Pioli, Cassel, Romeo, Daboll) to slowly create havoc within the team so they play like our Chiefs. No, sadly, we are stuck to suffer through this until December 31st. Pioli will be able to save his job because he will swan song Clark into believing it was the coaches that lost this season because the players he brought in have talent and skillssssss. Can’t you just hear Pioli hissing into Clark’s ear as he slithers away?

  • mepatri3

He should keep him. Think about it…what we want is for the Chiefs to keep losing. We need that 1st round draft pick – hopefully Barkley. I’m not saying root aganist the Chiefs, I’m saying root for them by keeping them on track for losses, and that means not doing anything now to upset that. This team is a disgrace, and if they start to win, they won’t be in as good a position in April.

Sorry Chiefs – time to reboot.

  • jimfromkcj

The Chief’s fans should bring Clark up to the Supreme court on a charge of subjecting his fans to 60 minutes of cruel and unusual punishment on a weekly basis.

  • Nathan Overman

Hmmm, wonder if we can make a phone call, and see if we can get Favre out of retirement! Make him the 3rd string QB and let him call plays on the sideline!

  • Ryan

I’m blown away by how poor my favorite team had played this season. Its one thing to lose this many games and at least play well but we are playing horrible football. I just want to see pioli, crenell, and daboll gone. Lets not forget casell who sucks balls. Just gut the team and start fresh next year and we can forget about this season.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tmorsbach Thomas L Morsbach

I think if Pioli doesn’t fire Romeo and trade Cassle this week he needs to go. Those two are not going to win us any games this year. As for the worst team in NFL history I would say we have at least one a win where the Detroit Lions a few years ago didn’t have any. It might be the worst Chief’s team ever but not the worst in the NFL.

  • John Frisbee

I don’t see Pioli getting fired. Crennel, yes, but not Pioli till he misses on another coach.
