Kansas City Chiefs Announce Practice Squad

Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

The Kansas City Chiefs made a number of cuts yesterday to get their roster down to the required 53 players and today they’ve announced their practice squad.

These eight players have been selected. They can be”called up” at any time during the season but they can also be signed by any other NFL team at any time.

WR Josh Bellamy, FB Patrick Dimarco, WR Junior Hemingway, DE Jerome Long, OT David Mims, WR Jamar Newsome, OL Luke Patterson, DB Neiko Thorpe

I figured Bellamy, Newsome, Hemingway and Long would make it. The first two were camp standouts and the latter two were draft picks. Mims is a guy they have been trying to develop for a while. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is called up at some point this season. Dimarco is the only fullback the Chiefs have around. They decided to go with four TEs and five running backs.

Interestingly, there could be changes coming to the practice squad soon. The Chiefs currently have 54 players on their roster because OLB Tamba Hali, who is suspended for the first week of the season, doesn’t count. That means as soon as Hali’s suspension ends, the Chiefs will have to make a roster move. It will be interesting to see if they take the last man off the roster and put him on the practice squad or just cut him outright.

What do you think, Addicts? Is there anyone missing you hoped would make the squad? I’d say Thorpe is the biggest surprise for me.

Look for Gray to go on the new IR on the 4th (the earliest they can do so). That will open up a spot for Hali.

If they sign Shaun Smith (probably after the first week, so his contract is not guaranteed), someone will have to be let go, though.

I agree, I’d be shocked if this was the Chiefs final roster. I think they will probably add a player or two.

Yes – some veteran DB’s please.

Could use a veteran backup on the OL, too.

All valid comment, wonder if someone could send a copy to Pioli. Sunday’s trans. list shows no activity with the Chiefs.

I would trade a RB for a DB we do have5 of them.

  • Lyle Graversen

I was pretty close with my prediction, the only real surprise for me is that Brandon Bair wasn’t on this list. I’m also a little surprised that they kept 3 WRs on the PS.

I’m thinking Bair wasn’t PS eligible, because he was active too many games last year.

And I think they’re going WR heavy in anticipation of losing Bowe and maybe Breaston (contract going up, I think).

I’m delighted that they kept Tanney. Did you see the accuracy of that long pass when he was under pressure!.

good im glad we kept hemingway around. I think he could be a weapon if we give him time

  • Jim Harper

I think DeMarco is the most expendable with our wealth of running backs and tight ends. Until we know for sure Flowers is healthy they will hold on to Thorpe.
