Matt Cassel Booed At All-Star Softball Game?

Being good Kansas City sports folk, I know you are all aware that the MLB All-Star game and festivities are taking place in Kansas City this week. One such event, a Legends and Celebrities softball game, was held over the weekend and according to The Lawrence Journal-World, Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel was booed during his introduction.

"Self also was booed during pregame introductions by MU fans. KU fans tried their best to drown out the nasty reception.“I always kind of thought Mizzou people liked me for some reason. I guess I was off base on that a little bit,” said Self, who wasn’t the only local player booed. Fans booed K.C. Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel during introductions, but gave him polite applause during his at-bats."

Ouch.

Now without a video (if you were there and captured this on your phone, please fire me an email at patrick.arrowheadaddict@gmail.com), it is impossible to know how bad the boos were. You are always going to have a few knuckleheads in the crowd at these kinds of events but if it was severe enough for the Journal-World to mention, it must have at least been a respectable volume of booing.

Look, I know Cassel has had his struggles as KC’s QB but shame on those folks who booed. They’re perfectly within their rights to express themselves but come on, man! Cassel is a great guy who does a lot of really good work in the community. While he hasn’t played at an All-Pro level since arriving in KC, he does have one Pro Bowl appearance and an AFC West Championship under his belt in three seasons. Cut the guy some slack. He might or might not be the answer but he is certainly no bum.

If fans are upset that Matt Cassel is still the QB in Kansas City then they should go stand outside Scott Pioli’s house and boo him. Then again, considering Pioli has put together a pretty dang good roster for this season I’d think it might be wise for those fans to hold off for a couple of more months to see how this season plays out.

The fact is the Chiefs are on the rise and that is evident to anyone with a set of eyeballs. I’m as frustrated as anyone that the Chiefs haven’t won a playoff game since the Lincoln administration but Matt Cassel hasn’t done anything to deserve getting booed by his own fans. We’re Chiefs fans, not Eagles fans. We’re better than that.

Boo Larry Johnson. Don’t boo Matt Cassel.
