Pioli: We’re Gonna Surprise You With One Of These At Some Point

Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli surprised a lot of people with his selection of Dontari Poe at #11 last night in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

According to Pioli, the surprises may keep coming.

While talking with Josh Looney of KCChiefs.com late last night after the first round, Pioli snuck in a very interesting soundbite when Looney asked him about day two of the draft.

“We’ve still got positions we want to improve the competition and the depth,” said Pioli. “And also start thinking about the future too and continue to add players. There’s still a lot of good players left up on this board. We’re excited.”

Pioli then added with a bit of a twinkle in his eye:

“We’re gonna surprise you with one of these at some point, Josh.”

Interesting. Could mean nothing but I’m not sure why Pioli would say something like that. There really isn’t a whole lot to be gained by letting slip that you might make a pick that surprises people after you just made a pick that surprised people.

What could the Chiefs do in the rest of the draft that would surprise us more than taking Dontari Poe? A QB? Weeden would have surprised me but he is long gone. Osweiler? There are rumors that the Donkeys are targeting him at #36 and the Chiefs don’t pick until #44.

I don’t know. Anybody have any ideas?
