Carlson Ditches Chiefs, Heads To Minnesota

The first news we got involving the Kansas City Chiefs and a potential free agent was that former Seahawks TE John Carlson was coming to KC for a visit.

Well he did. And then he left.

According to Bill Williamson of ESPN.com, Carlson cut his visit in KC short to fly to Minnesota to meet with the Vikings. Williamson reports Carlson will likely sign there.

More than likely what happened here is that the Chiefs made Carlson an offer but then he got a better one from the Vikings. The Chiefs obviously view Carlson as a #2 TE to Tony Moeaki and so they likely weren’t offering a ton of cash. The Vikings are expected to lose Visanthe Shiancoe and so they need help at that position.

The thing about these visits is that if a guy visits and leaves there is a good chance he isn’t coming back. Not always, but since the player usually gets an offer on a visit, they can leave with that offer and use it to get a bit more out of another team.

The Chiefs will be able to find decent TE options without overpaying. If KC is going to spend big, it needs to be on RT or NT. Or both.
