Al Saunders Interviews For Chiefs' Offensive Coordinator Job

According to Bob Gretz of, former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders interviewed to be the current Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator once again.

Gretz is down at the Super Bowl, as are a number of other current and former NFL folks. Like former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil.

From Gretz:

And, visiting the Chiefs yesterday to talk about the offensive coordinator’s job was Al Saunders, former offensive coordinator under Dick Vermeil and long-time assistant coach with the franchise. Last season, Saunders was with Oakland as the Raiders offensive coordinator.

“Al is there today talking with Romeo,” Vermeil said Wednesday in Indianapolis as he was making the rounds of radio row. “He wants to see if there’s any chance to go back to Oakland, but if not he’d love the Chiefs job.”

Interesting. I wouldn’t mind having Saunders back. The Chiefs had a terrific offense under Saunders and often times made things work with minimal talent. Surely Vermeil had a lot to do with that, but we would be naive to think that Saunders also wasn’t responsible for the team’s offensive success.

I’d be very happy to see Al back in KC. Almost as happy as I would be to see him not back in Oakland.

Al Saunders as our next offensive coordinator would be another A+ move by the Chiefs organization toward building a championship once again in Kansas City. He is definitely an offensive minded Icon and guru. On the offensive side of coaching we would not have to wonder if our team could take the ball down the field often. Our scoring, offensive passing yards and offensive rushing yards would not doubt hover in the top 5 of the Conference and NFL. Al Sanders is an offensive minded genius and right now there are none better who are available. Saunders has great rapport and respect with and from players and Saunders has a blessed ability to correct player weaknesses and develops them quickly. He knows how to utilize player personnel to their strengths within his explosive offensive schemes. Coach Saunders presence on the field would allow Head Coach Reid to use his excellent coaching and game plan skills to the pinnacle of success. This pick is a no brainer with proven success and quick results. We love you here in Kansas City, Coach Al Saunders.
