The Kansas City Chiefs absolutely have to get a road win today over the Indianapolis Colts if they hope to climb back into the race in the AFC West.
Here are five things I think the good guys need to do if they are to keep the Colts winless.
1. Live by the pass, die by the pass
Matt Cassel has been less than stellar this season but he showed last week that he still has the ability to make plays through the air. If he can carry that momentum into this week’s game, the Chiefs should be able to move the football through the air. Dwayne Bowe and Steve Breaston have shown themselves to be effective weapons. If Jonathan Baldwin gets on the field today then there is no doubt the Chiefs will have favorable match up in the passing game. If KC can be bold and Matt Cassel can play well, the Chiefs’ offense could look better today than it has all season.
2. Protect the Cassel.
Pretty much the only thing the Colts have going for them right now is their premier pass rushers Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis. Branden Albert and Barry Richardson need to step up and keep the heat off of Matt Cassel. If they can do that, the KC receivers should be able to get open vs. the Colts’ secondary. If not, Cassel could crumble.
3. All hail Hali
The Chiefs D needs Tamba Hali to get going and get going early. Curtis Painter will be getting the start today for the Colts. Chances are Romeo Crennel will be able to mix his coverages to confuse Painter but it won’t work unless the Chiefs get pressure. As we know, that begins and ends with Tamba Hali.
4. Get a special TD
The KC special teams and Javier Arenas have been on the brink of breaking a big TD run all season long. The field position is great but what the Chiefs really need are points. Today is the day for Arenas to break one for a score.
5. Protect the pigskin
As always, the Chiefs need to protect the football. They’ve done a good job of that the last two weeks and as a result, they’ve been in both games. The Colts are struggling mightily and the Chiefs can’t afford to give them any help.
