8-8 would be an improvement over 2010.

Gorgeous visual of the Chiefs' 2011 schedule from NFL.com.

Brutal.

Absolutely brutal.

The 2010 season was a stunner for so many reasons.  I think all of us diehards have come to accept the inevitable pain of a team in rebuild.  And when the pieces come together so dramatically, like they did in 2010, it’s easy to fall under the illusion that this team is on the doorstep of contending.

Then the NFL unleashes the 2011 schedule and it resets every expectation you have for this team: in 16 games, we play four division winners, both Super Bowl teams, every one of the most elite QBs professional football has to offer (Brady, Manning, Rogers), every one of the best defenses the NFL has to offer (Jets, Chargers, Steelers, and Ravens in the preseason), and we end the season in Denver.

It’s tough to really look this schedule over and say to yourself: this could be an 11-5 playoff season.  Which tells you everything you need to know about our young, still promising, but still very rebuilding team.

We faced the NFC East and bottom dwellers across the AFC in 2010, and we deservedly ate them alive.  This is the year where every ounce of our mettle is tested, and we can proudly assess exactly how far it is this team has to go for a Super Bowl.

I think 8 &8 is probably close to where we are at in terms of our schedule and the current level of talent we have. I doubt we are going to see the same bang for the buck we got out of last years draft class with this years class of rookies. Even adding some established FA's to our team won't be enough to compensate for lack of OTA's and player development needed to get over the hump of top tier team scheduling. For all of the backlash Haley got for stating the obvious last year " WE aren't that good yet" it appears to me that he was correct in his evaluation. Should we lower our expectations ? I say no we shouldn't, but I am also cognizant of the reality of where this team is at talent wise.

Trying to be as non-homer as possible, this team exceeded my expectations last year. It's not unreasonable to think they do the same again, especially if players continue to develope. I think repeating a 10-6 season, or even 9-7, would be an improvement. However, I'm not willing to lower my expectations just because the schedule is harder this year. We are capable of reaching the playoffs again

Lawrence Couldn't agree more all this talk about a hard schedual we're going to the super bowl this year and if you dont think so what kind of fan really even says anything different?

Personally, I think this article is your attempt of getting ready for heartbreak, I didn't really read your actual article because the title to me says it all. 8 - 8 is not improvement if you had a 10 - 6 record the year before. You need to raise the expectations of this team you say your a fan of. No one had problems being happy when they went 10 - 6 last season, but you get a few tough teams and everyone wants to back down now. I see a 9 - 7 or 10 - 6 record and that is what I expect from the team.

With this schedule, Haley will have to come out very hot at the beginning of the season. Going to be hard, new OC, draft picks will have to play and at the beginning of season, Clark will have to spend on free agents. Cannot see all that coming together, especially when you add the lockout and all it implies. May actually change their view of the draft. If they go developemental player at 21, then it will say just what they thought they accomplished last year at 10-6, mot much. At least, the West plays the same teams, timing may play a role here. Of course, injuries and free agency may matter more than in the past. 8-8 may be an improvement over 10-6 based on what Clark/Pioli give Haley to use this year. Heck 7-9 may be if we get a 09 draft repeated or no free agents to fill in for the year.

Without OTAs and the possibility of the lockout continuing into training camp, I think it's a bit of a stretch to think that our rookies will be in any kind of position to make an immediate impact. Quite the contrary, their participation will more likely be a huge liability in the early part of the season. You never really know what your schedule is going to be like until you actually play it but all things being equal, the team continues to progress, etc., my expectation is for the Chiefs to go no worse than 8-8, best possible case 12-4.

tm1946, you just hit the nail on the head regarding the draft. "Projects" will fall in this draft because teams simply won't get the time they want to groom them. NFL-ready prospects will skyrocket up charts.

You've got high expectations looking for them to go 12-4. I figured 8-8 last year.... I'll go with that again.

I said 12-4 best possible case. Realistically, I see 8-8.

C'mon, you've got to at least spell the Super Bowl MVP's name right - Rodgers :)

Touche. You win this round. Don't get used to it!

Maybe I'm over-optimistic. But I still see this team going 10-6 and at least repeating a double win season.

Based on the last two games, no CBA, lockout, and we know nothing about the draft or free agency, 10-6 might be a bit over-achieving. Just look at the end of the year, the Chiefs get heavy hitter teams back to back to back. But why not?

It's also important to remember that a lockout hurts young, developing teams. Our young, developing players NEED to offseason to patch the holes in their game, and constant coaching is a must.

This is the year they have got to have a good record against their afc west rivals in their division plus win a lot of their non conferance games.we are a few good men short, hopefully they can take care of that problem by free agency.especially a another number one wide reciever, and a back up quarterback that can actually do something if needed.no more croyle,he is history.

One quick question...If a "win is a win," then when is 8 wins an improvement over 10 wins? With the Chargers schedule do you really think they will only win 7 or 8 games?

Simple: What record do you think last year's team would have finished with if they played the 2011 schedule? My guess is about 6 games.

With last year's team I see about 9 wins not 6. 3 - 3 in the division then some wins against the Dolphins, Bears, Jets, Lions, Bills, and Vikings.

Paddy pretty much nailed it, of course. Not every schedule is created equal. Last year's schedule was a cakewalk, this one is a briar patch. If this team continues improving like it did last season, we'll end up with about 8 wins this season. That's my prediction, anyway.

Im excited about the schedule. I think the Superbowl is out of reach of course. My season whipping the Raiders, Broncos, Chargers and getting the Division Championship again. The Division teams are going to be tough too!

The other wild card that will make 2010 very difficult to duplicate is the great luck we had with injuries last year. We had very few players miss multiple games. If we have a more normal year with injuries in 2011, it will make the nasty schedule even nastier.

Ugh. Excellent point, even if it's depressing.

I hear that, but the Chiefs have been one of the healthiest teams over the past few seasons. I know that anything can happen, but I'm just not seeing the trend breaking any time soon. We can at least hope right?

Yup. This team was decimated by injury during the Herm Edwards years, mostly because Herm Edwards didn't condition our teams for anything. Haley has completely reversed that trend, and voila, we're not one of the healthiest. I don't think it's coincidence.
