Arrowhead Trivia! Lamar Hunt!

by Chiefs

KC Chiefs Founding Father Lamar Hunt

Lamar Hunt came up with the name “Super Bowl ” while watching his daughter play with a “super ball” in the backyard one fine summer evening.

The first member of the Chiefs ever to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame was owner and founder Lamar Hunt who went in with the 1972 class.  The first Chiefs player inducted was linebacker Bobby Bell in 1983.

Before his entry into pro football team ownership, Lamar Hunt and his brothers attempted to corner the silver market. (conroversy here)

For winning the AFC Championship game a team is awarded the Lamar Hunt Trophy, named for our hero of course!

Marty Schottenheimer recently said on Sirius NFL Radio that Lamar Hunt was the absolute finest human being he had ever known, including his father.

Marty, I never knew him, but I’ll take your word.

Jim and DD I prefer to think along Jims lines, what famous person doesnt have a brother or sister or two who embarrasses or takes advantage of trusts at times. I thought as did DD until I did some research. Im not gonna research it any further, would be very interested to see what others thoughts are on what actually happened. At this point. he is the greatest owner ever in my opinion!

I seem to remember that he was never charged, but lost some money because some of his assets were intermingled with his brothers through inheritance. His brothers were almost wiped out, while LaMar came out of it with most of his assets intact.

Sorry DD. Not only was he implicated, he settled suits filed against him for such deeds out of court. http://www.nytimes.com/1989/04/04/business/lamar-hunt-settles-suits.html

Well it appears my knowledge was indeed incomplete! Then again, more often than not it's a lot cheaper and less distracting to simply settle than to spend decades paying lawyers to exonerate oneself. I always heard it was just his two brothers that were behind it. My, my, the luster of NFL owners fades just a bit more, doesn't it?

To my knowledge, Lamar was never implicated in the Hunt brothers' infamous attempt to corner the silver market. Rather, it was Lamar's brothers Nelson Bunker Hunt and William Herbet Hunt who attempted the failed scheme.

The fact that the Lamar Hunt Trophy is cast in silver is pure coincidence.
