Report: Chiefs To Release Darling, Savage

Per Josh Lonney on Twitter:

Chiefs will be announcing the release of WR Devard Darling and RB Dantrell Savage this morning

The Chiefs look to be clearing some roster space before the start of free agency and Darling and Savage are apparently not a part of the plan moving forward.

Savage was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He showed show talent but never really got an extended opportunity to prove himself. I have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of Savage and I wish him the best.

Darling tore his ACL in the preseason, which was unfortunate for him as it looked like he was going to get a legitimate shot to be one of the Chiefs top two receivers.

This move will give both Darling and Savage a chance to find other homes. It also may be a of clue as to positions the Chiefs may look to fill when free agency begins on Friday. I for one, think they are going to take a run at Darren Sproles. The release of Savage, a smaller, quicker back similar to Jamaal Charles, makes me think they might be planning to bring Sproles in to replace him.

For now, the Chiefs have kept Jackie Battle, their biggest back on the roster. If they bring in another HB, I think it might be someone smaller, like Sproles, who can handle 3rd down back duties as well as kick off and punt returns. Stay tuned!

JT, I couldn't agree more about the late round TE draft picks that we can snag. There will be some studs coming out this year and I hope are scouts know which one is "The Man". Isure don't, because they all looked pretty impressive.

Jeremy, why not? We have a major need at reciever and Boldin isn't exactly what you call over the hill.He would provide MC with sure hands & solid routes immediately!A 2nd round draft pick will not be more than a developing reciever for the next two years. Look at Bowe, we are still waiting for that amazing year out of him. Three years and counting for that matter. AB is a solid immediate option for us and I would be pleased if we went after him.

Yeah we do want more picks! This is an exciting time of year I think, something called "hope" I think. I see a trend for smaller backs and support that. Hulks like LJ just dont work with weak protection.

Shane and JT:

I love the excitment, but I just don't see us giving up a pick for Boldin.

We want more picks not less.

Shane, Im right there with you. Can you imagine Boldin on one side, Bowe on the other, and Chambers in the slot, plus Charles and Sproles in the Backfield. D-coordinators will be pulling their hair out. Not to mention the possibilities at TE that are available, as this is a deep draft at the TE position. I think Pioli is gonna make a splash in FA this year with a lot of smart pick-ups. The O-line will be solidified this year, and I think we are going to be deep with talent at that position by the time the season starts. The defense on the other hand, that might be a longer work in progress than the offense. We need at least 2 LBs, one inside and one outside opposite Tamba who I think is the next James Harrison. We need 2 safetys, another DE and ofcourse, a dominate NT.

I think the AX and give us what we need in the third and short yardage as long as he stays healthy. I will be stoked if we pick up Sproles and would dance a jig if we got AB from AZ. Will shall see soon!
