Chiefs Release Goff, Re-sign Smith, Gutierrez

"Chiefs release 2009 starting RG Mike Goff…re-sign RB Kolby Smith and QB Matt Gutierrez"

I can’t really say I am surprised the Chiefs dumped Goff. When he wasn’t playing terribly he wasn’t playing at all. His acquisition was clearly the biggest blunder Pioli made last season.

I am also not surprised that Gutierrez was kept. I think the Chiefs like all 3 of their QB’s and I expect them to all be back, unless they think they can get some trade value for Croyle.

I am only mildly surprised by the re-signing of Smith. I remember Haley saying he really liked Smith last season, however, in games Smith was not very impressive. He had only 15 carries for 33 yards and a paltry 2.2 yards per carry average in 2009. To be fair, that is a very small sample size of a guy coming off an injury. His return was short lived and he went right back on to the IR list.

Injury concerns aside, this may prove to be a clue as to what the Chiefs plan to do about their running back situation. Haley mentioned many times last year that one of the positional groups he was most excited about was the running backs. I am of the believe that if he Chiefs improve blocking up front, some combination of Charles, Smith, Battle and Savage should be adequate. Most think the Chiefs need a bigger back. Smith is not huge but he is bigger than Charles and Battle is an absolute beast.

Is it possible the Chiefs feel they are solid at RB? If so, we may see them focus on other positional groups come April.
