Romeo Crennel To Be Chiefs New Defensive Coordinator?

Adam Shefter has just reported on ESPN that it is highly possible Romeo Crennel will be the next defensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs.

“Romeo Crennel could be heading to Kansas City next season as the Chiefs defensive coordinator. Came close to taking that job last offseason. His hip injury prevented that from happening. Crennel is feeling better, wants back in and Kansas City looks like a likely landing spot,” said Shefter reporting with Chris Mortenson during the Sunday Headlines segment at 11:30 EST today.

This is, at this time, purely speculation. However, Shefter has a very good track record with his reporting. If he says Crennel may be coming to KC then it is most certainly a big possibility. We’ll monitor this situation closely over the next few days.

My guess is that the Chiefs will move quickly if they plan to replace Clancy Pendergast, especially if the Chiefs GM Scott Pioli wanted Crennel last season. You may remember the Chiefs hired a few defensive assistants last offseason but took some time to name a coordinator. Reports at the time were that Pioli was waiting for Crennel to make a decision on whether he wanted to coach in 2009. I have theorized in the past that Clancy Pendergast was nothing but a placeholder for this season and that he was likely aware of the situation. I wouldn’t be surprised if Pendergast is kept on the staff as an assistant if Crennel takes over at coordinator.

What do you think Addicts? Will Clancy Pendergast be given more time turn the Chiefs defense around or was his purpose simply to install the 3-4 and act as a placeholder for Romeo Crennel?
