With the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs drafted Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy with the hopes that he could unlock more electricity from Patrick Mahomes and the offense. Worthy played well as a rookie, compiling over 630 yards receiving and scoring six touchdowns.
His second season, however, was a regression. Worthy finished the year with 532 yards and just a single touchdown in 14 games played. He also dealt with injuries and that definitely limited him in 2025.
Worthy spoke about his shoulder injury during mini camp and gave Chiefs fans a look into how that injury impacted him for the better.
"Obviously with the shoulder injury, I had to have surgery in January, so really it was just building on getting stronger, getting that back in the flow. I feel like that might have been the best thing for me—learning how to be a pro and how to approach the mental aspect and just getting your body prepared for certain things. I feel like I kinda hit that hard this offseason. You can’t really do too much with a torn labrum, but it is what it is. Play through it and onto the next."
Chiefs fans won’t overlook what Xavier Worthy just admitted
As Chiefs fans know, when healthy, Worthy can be a difference-maker. He proved that during his rookie season and was a dependable weapon for Mahomes throughout the season. The dropoff in Year 2 was disappointing but at least the injury offers an explanation for that drop in production.
The Chiefs opted not to address the wide receiver position much, proving that they believe in Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Tyquan Thornton as the starters. They re-signed Thornton, which was a move Chiefs fans were perfectly fine with, and spent a fifth-round pick on Cyrus Allen in the draft. Otherwise, they didn't do much to improve the position.
If Worthy can bounce back to his rookie self, the gamble will have been worth it. Hopefully, what he's saying comes to fruition and a breakout season is on the horizon for the former Texas Longhorn.
