With some numbers, it's easy to say "there's no debate", but that's literally true for No. 16. Our journey through the greatest stories behind each uniform number in Kansas City Chiefs history includes some lopsided calls, where the best player is obvious. But we've now come to No. 16 and there's just no way to create any drama or mystery around this one. But Lenny the Cool makes this one fun to explore nonetheless.

The complete history of Chiefs players to wear No. 16

The Best (And Only): Len Dawson

This is as straightforward as it gets.

Len Dawson is not only the greatest Chiefs player to ever wear the number, but he is also the only one who ever has. That's fitting, because No. 16 belongs to Dawson in a way few numbers belong to anyone in the NFL—not just the Chiefs.

Before Patrick Mahomes turned Kansas City into the center of the football universe, Dawson was the Chiefs' quarterback who established greatness at the position.

Dawson surfaced when the team was still the Dallas Texans, then followed the franchise to Kansas City and became the franchise's face for everything Lamar Hunt was trying to build. In an era that did not make life easy on quarterbacks, Dawson was a clutch performer who led the AFL in completion percentage seven times, passer rating six times, and touchdown passes four times. Dawson literally helped to define an era of professional football.

Dawson's peak, of course, came in Super Bowl IV, when he led the Chiefs to a 23-7 upset of the Minnesota Vikings and earned MVP honors in the process. That victory did more than give K.C. its first Super Bowl title. It validated the entire AFL, cemented the Chiefs as a foundational franchise, and made Dawson a true luminary. In the process, he was inducted into both the Chiefs Ring of Honor and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Beyond the on-field accomplishments, however, Dawson is also woven into the fabric of the franchise in other ways. Dawson was an award-winning broadcaster with HBO and NBC and was a sports anchor at KMBC-TV. Overall, Dawson invested well over a half-century into the Chiefs organization and greater community before he passed at the age of 87 in 2022, which led to influence for multiple generations of K.C. fans.

So, yes, Len Dawson is the best Chiefs player to wear No. 16. He is also the only one. That's honestly how it should be.
