A couple of former Kansas City Chiefs were found among the many tryouts happening across the National Football League on Thursday. Wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling and defensive tackle Cole Brevard were both called to work out for franchises with interest in filling spots one week before the regular season is set to begin.
Brevard has had quite a week after getting waived from the Chiefs' offseason 90-man roster, only to return to the practice squad before being released once again to make room for defensive tackle Marcus Harris. A big run-stuffer weighing in at nearly 350 lbs., Brevard tried to boost his NFL stock with a year at Texas in '25 after transferring from Purdue. He still went undrafted but the Chiefs signed him as an undrafted free agent in early May.
On Thursday, Brevard spent time with the Buffalo Bills, who are searching for help along the defensive interior. The competition was stiff, however, with five other tackles in town with the same hope, a group that included Jay Toia and Zion Wilson. The Bills didn't make any official decision by the time the league finalized the day's transaction report, so it's possible Brevard hears something soon.
Valdes-Scantling was one of a whopping 17 players attempting to convince the Las Vegas Raiders' coaches and front office execs that they were worth the effort. If the Raiders are set on a wide receiver, however, MVS can take comfort in knowing there was only one other competitor at his position: journeyman wideout Ronnie Bell (who just so happens to be a K.C. native).
Chiefs fans will know Valdes-Scantling from his two seasons with the team in 2022-23, both championship seasons for the franchise. MVS originally signed a three-year, $30 million deal in free agency to extend the vertical impact of the passing attack. While he had his moments—63 catches for 1,002 yards and 3 scores—he never developed into the trusted downfield weapon the Chiefs needed and his penchant for drops (and high cap hit) got him released after two seasons.
Since playing for the Chiefs, Valdes-Scantling has shuttled from one franchise to another for a total of different employers since he entered the NFL. Most recently he spent time with the Dallas Cowboys in training camp before being cut at the roster cut deadline.
