Trey Smith gets penalized for simply being a tenacious blocker

Who knew that was even a penalty?

It's no secret that Trey Smith is a bad man. He's tough as nails, excellent at his craft, and gives no ground up to anyone at any time. He's also about to make himself a lot of money in a matter of months.

The bigger picture regarding Smith is that he's a free agent to be this offseason and someone with his experience and talent should have no problem resetting the guard market in the NFL. Every team would be lucky to feature someone like him up front which is why the Chiefs might have a hard time keeping him around if forced to match top dollar.

But for now, no matter how the future plays out, we are happy just to appreciate moments like the (silly) one that happened in the first half against the Buffalo Bills in Week 11.

Who knew that was even a penalty?

For those who missed it, some Bills and Chiefs got into a minor scrum in the second quarter. The end result from the clamor was offsetting personal foul penalties on both Chiefs guard Trey Smith and Bills lineman AJ Epenesa. A closer look, however, shows that Smith wasn't in the wrong at all.

Yeah, if you watch that closely, you'll see Smith coming into the picture and taking his guy all the way to the ground to finish his block. That's standard offensive line play and it should be celebrated, not penalized. We're pretty sure this is exactly what every lineman is taught to do. Is there a coach who doesn't want their guys to play through the whistle?

Maybe it looks that much more imposing because it's Trey Smith doing it. Or maybe it's because the—cough—Chiefs get all the calls.

Keep doin' what you do, Trey.
