Travis Kelce will undoubtedly go down as one of the best tight ends in NFL history. He's had the luxury of catching passes from talented quarterbacks during his 13-year career but just imagine how much better he could have been if, in the first part of his career, he was playing with Tom Brady instead of Alex Smith (no offense, Alex).
Brady brought this up during his recent appearance on the New Heights podcast, claiming that Kelce could have 110 or 120 receptions a year.
"You've had a unique athleticism, Trav, I will say that. Silky smooth route runner, like incredible feel out there. Like I think if I played with you, you would have had 110, 120 [catches] a year," Brady said. "Not that you don't have that with Patrick [Mahomes], but I like your style of play because I feel like there was a way you ran routes and you always had an ability to like, you know, feel the coverage and then turn in when they told you to turn up but who cares because you're open. Julian [Edelman] did that a little for me, Wes [Welker] did that a lot for me. Some guys don't really have that feel, but I just watch you play and I'm like, 'Yep, just like that'.
Tom Brady called out how Travis Kelce could have hit another gear
That's high praise from a guy who will likely go down as the greatest quarterback of all time. Brady might not have had Kelce to throw to but he had Rob Gronkowski at his disposal, another tight end who will go down as one of the all-time greats.
Kelce didn't have Brady as his quarterback but it's been hard for him to complain about the guys throwing him the pigskin during his career. Alex Smith might not have been the greatest quarterback ever but Kelce saw plenty of success with him as his signal-caller. Then, of course, in came Patrick Mahomes and the rest is history.
Kelce is now a three-time Super Bowl champion and, for a number of years, was THE guy at the tight end position. He's past his prime now but don't get it twisted, he's still a great player. It had to have been really freaking cool for him to hear Brady singing his praises like this but no Chiefs fan is surprised to hear it whatsoever.
