The path has been laid out for Matt Nagy slowly over the last few months. Now it appears that the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator has taken his first step out of Arrowhead's front door.

On Monday, the first day after the close of the 2025 regular season, the Tennessee Titans have wasted no time in their head coaching search. They have reportedly requested an interview with Nagy for the role, who has long been considered a favored candidate ever since the Titans fired Brian Callahan back in October.

Reports from various sources have linked Nagy with the Titans' head coach opening for several weeks, although Dianna Russini of The Athletic has been the primary source mentioning the potential marriage.

The Titans just took the first step toward potentially hiring Matt Nagy away from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi has known Nagy for several years after spending 15 seasons in the Chiefs front office, a stretch that dates back beyond current Chiefs GM Brett Veach and even his predecessor John Dorsey. It was former Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli who hired Borgonzi, who eventually made his way up the organizational ladder to become assistant GM.

Borgonzi was hired one year ago by the Titans, but he stuck with an inherited head coach in Callahan in his first season in Nashville. Callahan was replaced by Mike McCoy as interim starting in Week 6, but the Titans have been expected to wipe the slate clean since Callahan's ouster.

Most recently, the Titans restructured the organizational flow chart so that Borgonzi had even more bandwidth to call his own shots—including the hiring of a new head coach. Tennessee owner Amy Strunk Adams signed off on the new level of authority, and Borgonzi now has a clear runway to bring on Nagy, or anyone else of his choosing.

Other candidates have been mentioned, of course, but it will be a bit of a surprise if the Titans go with anyone else in the end. Nagy's contract is up in K.C., and there's been so much smoke linking the coach with the team. The first step was always the interview request, and now the coaching carousel starts to spin for all parties involved.
