The Andy Reid retirement rumors don't appear to be going anywhere even with Big Red signing a five-year extension last year and vocalizing his desire to continue coaching. That being said, it is worth asking how much longer Reid will want to coach but defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo gave the perfect answer to that.
When asked in an interview with Questions for Cancer Research how long he thinks Reid will coach, Spags kept it simple.
"If I was Andy, I'd go as long as Patrick Mahomes is there, right?"
Steve Spagnuolo says if he were Andy Reid, he'd coach until Patrick Mahomes leaves
Reid was a successful coach during his lengthy tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles but was never able to get over the hump and win a Super Bowl there. It seemed like a Super Bowl win would be the only strike against Reid when it came to making the Hall of Fame someday even when he got to Kansas City and the Chiefs would continue to get bounced from the playoffs right away.
That all changed when the Chiefs drafted Patrick Mahomes. Reid finally had a quarterback capable of getting him to the big game and helping him win it. Why not continue to coach until Mahomes' time in the league is also coming to an end?
Mahomes turns 30 in September and still has seven years remaining on the 10-year deal he signed in 2020 (though there is a potential out on the contract in 2028, per Spotrac). Meanwhile, Reid is 67 years old and has four more years left on his deal. If he were to stay through the end of Mahomes' contract he'd be 74 years old, which would be a reasonable age to still be coaching.
If Reid thinks he can continue to add to his Hall of Fame resume as long as Mahomes is at the helm, why not ride off into the sunset at the same time? It makes perfect sense. Let's hope Reid listens to Spags' advice here.
