Stephen A Smith rewrites Tyreek Hill history in Chiefs pitch

ESPN's resident something-or-other joins in the chorus for those calling for a homecoming for Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs, even if he doesn't get his facts straight.

Chris Jones wants him back. Oddsmakers think he'll be back. In the past, Tyreek Hill has even intimated that he'd be up for a return to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Just in case anyone else was needed to join in the chorus, ESPN loudmouth Stephen A. Smith has decided to weigh in on the matter, because apparently anyone has been invited to chime in. And of course, Smith is bringing the most educated angle of all, as illustrated on his recent rant on First Take.

Smith recently weighed in on the fact that Hill was just released by the Miami Dolphins earlier this week, part of a series of player releases that gave the team considerable financial room while cleaning house of veteran players earning more than they were worth in 2026. Smith gave a thumbs-up to the idea of a reunion that so many have been debating at this late stage in Hill's career.

ESPN's resident something-or-other joins in the chorus for those calling for a homecoming for Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs.

"As far as I’m concerned, you know what? He should be targeting going back to Kansas City. He should want to go back and play with Patrick Mahomes because he is desperately needed. With Tyreek Hill there, I don’t care that you’ve got [Xavier] Worthy and [Rashee] Rice. They ain’t Tyreek Hill. They ain’t Tyreek Hill. Those brothers are good, you understand? Rice, especially. But I’m telling you right now, Tyreek Hill out there, it’s something to behold when healthy. That’s what they should be looking at. That’s what they should be targeting."

Just in case you want to give Smith too much credit for actually knowing the names of a few members of the Chiefs offense, listen to his description of what led to Hill's departure from Kansas City in the first place.

"He should want to go back, because dammit, he should have never left. He left for a little change. I get all of that part. Miami offered him a little more money than Kansas City did, so you gotta get your money while you can in the National Football League and I understand that. But if there’s a way for him to get back to playing with a quarterback the likes of Patrick Mahomes, he should do it."

Yeah, Smith has a penchant for rewriting history (or person's names) to fit whatever jumbled mess is emerging from his lips in a given moment. In this instance, somehow Hill left as a free agent to Miami after K.C. was outbid, which goes against the "fake news" of Brett Veach actually trading Hill to the Dolphins for five draft picks back in 2022.

Nevertheless, Smith does boil down the list of potential suitors to three, with the Chiefs as his favorite. "It should be Kansas City, Buffalo, or Baltimore, one of the three. And I say back to Kansas City because obviously, he’s incredibly familiar with the coaching. He’s incredibly familiar with the quarterback. He’s incredibly familiar with the fan base. That’s where he should want to go back to."
