Sometimes, all it takes is a change of scenery. For wide receiver Skyy Moore, his time away from Kansas City has provided the narrative twist he was hoping to find.

Moore was part of the Chiefs' famed Class of 2022, a monster rookie haul that featured star corners like Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, safety Bryan Cook, linebacker Leo Chenal, and defensive end George Karlaftis. Together, the '22 draft class formed a defensive nucleus that went to three Super Bowls in four seasons and won two rings together.

Unfortunately for Moore, he's the asterisk on the Chiefs' draft class.

Instead of stepping into a meaningful role as an exciting young target catching passes from Patrick Mahomes and working alongside Travis Kelce and company, Moore wilted in the face of numerous opportunities with the Chiefs. He caught only 43 catches for 494 yards in 890 total offensive snaps in Kansas City across three full seasons.

The Green Bay Packers are hoping to unlock the next level of Skyy Moore's impact.

When Brett Veach found a way to swap picks with the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Moore, fans were ecstatic that the Chiefs general manager at least found a way to salvage some value in exchange for a player who was occupying a valuable roster spot. For Moore, the Westward trip gave him enough distance from the "draft bust" chants in K.C. to restart his career anew.

One year later, the Niners are sad to have lost Moore this spring after his lone year with the team. Per Matt Barrow of The Athletic, "49ers’ brass was sorry to see receiver Skyy Moore leave in free agency for the Green Bay Packers." That speaks volumes about the way Moore was able to rebuild his value away from K.C., and raises questions about why the Chiefs never tried to utilize his talents like they did in San Fran in 2025.

The Chiefs rarely threw Moore into the mix at returner during his three years with the team, but the Western Michigan product became an exciting option for the 49ers when returning both punts and kicks. Moore had only 5 kickoff returns and 3 punt returns—mostly from his rookie year in '22—during his time in Kansas City. Meanwhile, he averaged 11.6 yards/return on 25 punts and 27.5 yards/return on 33 kickoffs.

The Packers served up a one-year deal for $2.5M for Moore in free agency to provide a special teams catalyst. Moore also has plenty of offensive incentives built into the deal in case he finds greater trust in the team's passing attack. And as Barrow notes, the 49ers were frustrated to lose him saying, "He was their best kick returner in some time, and Shanahan was looking forward to getting him more involved in the passing game after Moore was a late arrival via trade last season."

Now the Packers will hope to unlock the next stage of Moore's development years after he first arrived in Kansas City. Things didn't click for either side in his first few seasons in the league, but Moore's turnaround has been a heartening story given how things started off. Hopefully he sees further success in Green Bay.
