Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, and Jalen Royals. Those are the only three names under contract at wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2026. JuJu Smith-Schuster, Tyquan Thornton, Hollywood Brown, and Nikko Remigio are all due for free agency this offseason. Perhaps one of those names is re-signed in free agency. But for a room that has seen plenty of change over the last few seasons, it looks like the adjustments at the wide receiver spot will continue this year.
Kansas City will likely have its eyes on both free agency and the draft to sort out the wide receiver position. There will be many different wide receivers to choose from. Like any year, a variety of sizes and athletic profiles will be available to add to the puzzle. But for a team that has consistently relied on smaller wide receivers, it may be time for an addition who can separate and win in traffic.
One particular free-agent wide receiver who could be of interest to the Chiefs is Romeo Doubs. Doubs just wrapped up his rookie deal with the Green Bay Packers. It would not be surprising if many teams around the NFL have interest in acquiring his services.
Doubs just set a pair of single-season career highs in 2025 with receiving yards (724) and yards per reception (13.2). Additionally, he was credited with only three drops on the year. It was not always perfect during his run in Green Bay, as finding a consistent role and getting comfortable took some time under Matt LaFleur.
An intriguing free-agent market could push the Chiefs to gamble on Romeo Doubs to reshape their passing attack in 2026.
But once he grew into the player the Packers anticipated he could be, Doubs became a threat capable of churning out plenty of explosive gains. Add in his mix of size and speed, and Kansas City has not really had a wide receiver with that true size-and-quickness combination over the last few years.
All in all, Doubs is one of those wide receivers who is very willing to help out and block in the run game. Not many wide receivers enjoy doing that. The Chiefs have received spotty effort in that area at wide receiver recently. But even when there is some effort there, the run game has still lacked production for Kansas City. Doubs would add some attitude while blocking on the outside.
That ability translates to how Doubs plays in space with the ball in his hands. You can also see how strong of a pass catcher he is at the catch point. Overall, Doubs is a very aggressive, tenacious player. That helps him create those aforementioned explosives down the field. Because of how hard Doubs fights during routes and after the catch, any offense would love to have that type of playing demeanor in its pass-catching room.
Injury history would be the one major drawback to Doubs’ profile. It is something that any outside team looking to sign him will have to monitor and manage, of course. Even with his rising status and high potential, Doubs has a noted concussion history in the NFL. He also dealt with some lower-body ailments in the early portion of his Packers tenure.
When looking at where Doubs wins, you might assume he moves around the offensive formation frequently, coming from the Packers’ system. In reality, it is more of a deep route tree than anything else that allows him to make plays at different levels of the field.
Pro Football Focus shares his snap distribution throughout each of his NFL campaigns. In total, Doubs played 708 of his 869 snaps in 2025 out wide, with 115 in the slot. In 2024, he logged 620 snaps out wide and 73 in the slot. He was used 800 times on the outside and 127 times in the slot in 2023. Finally, Doubs received 426 snaps out wide and 97 reps in the slot during his rookie year in 2022. Green Bay trusted him to win against some of the better coverage corners on the perimeter.
In the end, Spotrac projects that Doubs will receive a free-agent contract in the range of $12 million per season. That is not necessarily an area where the Chiefs have spent heavily. But in an intriguing free-agent wide receiver class, Kansas City may have to take a bit of a chance to help restore the passing attack around Patrick Mahomes.
