Refs nearly screwed the Chiefs on early missed call while still sleeping vs. Raiders
By Ryan Heckman
Just a day after NFL Thanksgiving Day, the Kansas City Chiefs hosted the Las Vegas Raiders in the newer tradition of Black Friday Football.
In a home tilt against a familiar foe and division rival, the Chiefs started the game a little slow. But, they weren't the only ones.
After the Raiders were forced to punt midway through the first quarter, on a 4th-and-19, Las Vegas punter A.J. Cole thought he had just sailed the punt of a lifetime. Booting it from his own 31 yard line, Cole's punt soared all the way down to just inside the goal line and bounced out at the 1-yard line.
It was a thing of beauty. There was no arguing. That was one heck of a punt. Go ahead and see here for yourself.
Refs changed an early call during a commercial break which saved the Chiefs from abysmal field position
Following the play, the officials got together and announced a penalty on Kansas City, which would have initially backed them up to their own half-yard line.
The game went to a commercial break following that flag, but when the broadcast returned, the Chiefs were lined up at their own 23-yard line instead of their half-yard line.
Kirk Herbstreit and Al Michaels proceeded to explain that the officials got the call wrong and, while the game was on break, the Raiders punted it all over again which is why the Chiefs were in better field position at that point.
Many times, opposing fans have loved pointing the finger and whining about the Chiefs getting "all the calls," but this time, the crew indeed had no choice but to reverse that call and re-explain it, allowing for Kansas City to get into better field position in the end.
Unlike some other instances where opposing fans might have had some semblance of a leg to stand on, this penalty was blatantly called incorrectly. The Chiefs were justified in having the chance at fielding the punt a second time.
