By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs updated reporters on the latest regarding wide receiver Rashee Rice and his knee injury suffered in the team's Week 4 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. After some considerable time, Rice finally had surgery on his knee and the recovery is going to take quite some time, per head coach Andy Reid.
Reid spoke to reporters on Monday as the Chiefs return later this week from a bye. He stated that the timeline faced by Rice to return to the field is similar to that of a torn ACL, which is a more common injury compared to the posterolateral injury suffered by Rice.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid updated reporters on the latest regarding Rashee Rice's knee injury.
Here's the official word from Reid:
Rice went down with the knee injury on a fluke play in which his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, attempted to tackle Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton who was returning the ball after coming down with an interception—one of six thrown on the year by Mahomes. Rice was landed on awkwardly as Mahomes tried to assist with the tackle and was immediately taken out of the game.
For the last couple of weeks, Rice has undergone multiple tests and was forced to wait on his official results given the swelling in his knee. Early reports were hopeful that he might be able to return this season if the injury wasn't all that serious, but the most recent updates confirmed he'd at least miss the rest of the 2024 season.
Rice began the season by establishing himself as the primary target for Mahomes in his second year in the league, making his loss a considerable one. He led the team with 24 catches for 288 yards and 2 scores through his first three games of the season.
