Despite Brett Veach's latest remarks about Trent McDuffie's future, it still feels like anything can happen with the Chiefs corner this offseason.

The Los Angeles Rams are on the hunt. The Kansas City Chiefs might employ the target.

Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie's uncertain future with the franchise has brought every potential path forward into view. The Chiefs currently have McDuffie under contract through the '26 season on a fifth-year option, but that's at an elevated pay rate for the former first-round pick (2022). However, fans and NFL analysts have turned over every stone when discussing McDuffie—from a long-term contract extension to letting the current deal play out to a blockbuster trade.

The latest remarks from Rams general manager Les Snead brought the latter option into view on Tuesday. At a press conference, Snead stated that he was open to using one of the team's two first-round choices as trade fodder for an impactful veteran.

Despite Brett Veach's latest remarks about Trent McDuffie's future, it still feels like anything can happen with the Chiefs corner this offseason.

The Rams are no stranger to splash trades, so Snead isn't blowing smoke here. And the potential of such a deal refocuses the conversation around McDuffie as that player.

That's not to say that Snead is focused on McDuffie or even cornerback in particular. In fact, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby (or someone like him) could be the preferred acquisition instead. But that's where Snead is likely pointing when he refers to having trade discussions around the league, as teams try to cement their plans before free agency and the draft.

Snead's interest in McDuffie would be obvious for a few reasons. The Rams are set to lose four corners in free agency—Roger McCreary, Cobie Durant, Ahkello Weatherspoon, Derion Kendrick—so the need at the position is clear. With two firsts, two fifths, two sixths, and four seventh-round selections, in addition to their normal slots in the other rounds, Snead has plenty of draft capital to move.

McDuffie is also the sort of impact player who would move the meter for a GM like Snead. The Chiefs corner has grown into one of the league's best pass defenders in his first four seasons with the team. He was named a first-team All-Pro in '23 and was a second-team All-Pro in '24. He was PFF's 12th-highest graded corner this past season, and the Chiefs leaned on him heavily outside and in the slot.

As for the Chiefs, their interest in moving McDuffie would only be on the financial end. Another big-money extension could make things even tougher going forward for a team already up against the cap. But McDuffie is one of two defensive pillars on the team—an aging Chris Jones being the other—and the secondary is already set to lose plenty of players this offseason, including corner Jaylen Watson and safety Bryan Cook.

It's also important to note that the Chiefs have spoken openly about wanting to bring McDuffie back for the long haul. General manager Brett Veach was asked about the corner at the NFL Combine, and he made it clear that he would like to retain McDuffie with a new contract extension. Talks have been ongoing for quite some time, so it would mean a pivot if a trade were completed.

In short, McDuffie is the sort of dynamic, scheme-versatile weapon that any secondary in the NFL would be fortunate to have. There are other such players also potentially available in a trade, so Snead's comments don't have to mean that they're eyeing McDuffie in particular. However, if they want to leverage draft assets for the sake of a veteran upgrade, it definitely makes sense for the Rams to call the Chiefs and see what it would take.
