R Mason Thomas gives Chiefs another reason to worry before Week 1

Concerns about health and inexperience are already prevalent among the Chiefs pass rushers, and now those are intensified.

The Kansas City Chiefs' 2026 draft class has looked sensational in their first few months in red and gold. No one has taken an official snap, so expectations should be measured, but the reviews of rookies from the first to the seventh round have been strong in training camp and preseason games.

One of the most exciting finds is R Mason Thomas, a pass rusher out of Oklahoma who broke the mold when the Chiefs selected him at No. 40 overall in the second round. The speed element brought by his slighter build expands the palette for defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and his elite burst and acceleration look like obvious assets in practice and exhibitions.

Unfortunately, Thomas sat out practice for the Chiefs on Thursday as they head into Labor Day weekend. Word is that Thomas is dealing with a hamstring injury, which creates some apprehension with Week 1 looming in a week and a half.

The Chiefs have considerably upgraded the entire defensive line this offseason, but edge rusher remains a work in progress. The inexperience and youth at the position counter the promise of those same players, which means it might take some time before the Chiefs' pass rush clicks. Early-season reps are going to be vital for players like Thomas in his development, which means Thomas's hamstring will be something to watch as Week 1 approaches.

Ashton Gillotte is already working his way back from a ruptured plantar fascia, and no official timeline has been given for his return. That he's not on injured reserve points toward a September return, but there are no guarantees. His status for the season-opening game against the Broncos means that the position is already thin, and that's before Thomas sat out practice with the hamstring.

Those are only some of the questions at a position that's also counting on Felix Anudike-Uzomah to turn in meaningful snaps after missing all of last season due to a hamstring injury. Newcomer Jack Pyburn is the only other player on the depth chart, outside of George Karlaftis, and he's an undrafted waiver claim who's been on the roster for only a few days.

It's a bit too early to believe Thomas will be out. But for a position already dealing with injuries and lack of proven depth, the idea that Thomas is now part of the team's health concerns is a troubling development.
