The Kansas City Chiefs used this offseason to retool the roster after a down season. The defensive side saw a ton of turnover, but it could be for the better. They kicked the 2026 draft off with three straight defensive picks, and the last one of the bunch was edge rusher R Mason Thomas.
Despite being the 40th pick, he has the tools to be effective from Day 1, and ESPN's Field Yates seems to think that's the case. In an article written by Yates, he compiled a list of Day 2-3 picks that should make an immediate impact, and Thomas was mentioned.
In his breakdown around Thomas, Yates wrote, "Thomas was a top-25 player on my final board, so this was great value for the Chiefs to stay patient and land him. What he lacks in size (6-foot-2, 249 pounds), he makes up for with juice. He's a blur coming off the edge, with strong first-step quickness and active, combative hands. The Chiefs needed to find pass rushers who major in getting home quick to take the burden off Chris Jones. Mission accomplished."
And of course, this is all projection, but Yates isn't wrong in his assessment. Thomas is a player who provides this Chiefs defense with something they didn't have last season, and that should be effective for this group.
R Mason Thomas predicted by ESPN to give Chiefs defense boost
Last season, the Chiefs were tied for 28th in the NFL in team sacks (35), with Chris Jones leading the way with seven. George Karlaftis was second on the team with six sacks, but Kansas City understood that's nowhere good enough off the edge.
And that's where Thomas steps in. Over the last two seasons at Oklahoma, he was an explosive athlete who was able to consistently get into the backfield. The Florida native has great play strength with the burst to close on a quarterback in a hurry. In 42 games with the Sooners, Thomas had 65 total tackles, 25.5 TFLs, 17 sacks, and four forced fumbles.
Although he's a rookie, Karlaftis is the only player in that edge room that's a lock to be ahead of him on the depth chart. Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Ashton Gillotte are the two players that Thomas will compete against, but both players are entering crucial years.
Gillotte was a rotational piece last year, playing in 18% of the defensive snaps, logging 1.5 sacks. Anudike-Uzomah missed all of last year with a hamstring injury, but in the two prior seasons, he had three sacks in 34 games. The Chiefs desperately need juice off the edge, and Thomas seems poised to step into the role.
Getting acclimmated to the NFL landscape will take some time yet that doesn't mean Thomas won't be ready to contribute. He has everything that the Chiefs are looking for in the edge room and fans should keep a close eye on him in 2026.
