Xavier Worthy proves he's the real deal with can't-miss catches in Chiefs-Lions
By Mike Luciano
The Kansas City Chiefs didn't draft Xavier Worthy to be a like-for-like Tyreek Hill replacement, but there were points last year when the offense looked defanged due to a lack of great vertical speed and separation downfield. Worthy's main trait is speed, and the Chiefs look ready to unleash him.
In their preseason tussle with the Detroit Lions, Worthy was on the receiving end of a Patrick Mahomes deep shot that should serve as a predecessor of things to come in the regular season. When backup Carson Wentz came in to relieve Mahomes, the training camp star managed to find paydirt for the first time.
Wentz floated a deep ball into Worthy's arms, resulting in his first NFL touchdown (albeit in the preseason). The hype around Worthy reached a fever pitch after his record-breaking 4.22 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, but his first extended preseason action is showing there is without question some steak to back up all the sizzle.

Worthy had some concerns coming into the pros due to his very skinny frame, but Kansas City is banking on the idea that his game-changing speed is deadly enough for opposing defenses that his relatively iffy play strength can be overlooked.
While it remains to be seen who the true top dog in the Kansas City wide receiver room will be, all signs point to Worthy, Rashee Rice, and veteran Hollywood Brown taking the bulk of the snaps in the Chiefs' base offense. With Brown nursing an injury that could possibly limit him early in the season, Worthy has a chance to earn playing time as a rookie.
Worthy is by no means a finished product, but it appears as though teams will need to respect the danger his blazing velocity brings to the table. Be it Mahomes or Wentz throwing him the ball, Worthy was able to make some plays against Detroit.
