Oh, what might have been.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the New York Jets will kick off at MetLife Stadium as scheduled on this week's Sunday Night Football matchup and there will be plenty of eyeballs watching. It's the NFL in primetime so any contest between teams featured as the lone Sunday broadcast. Still, it should have been so much more.

The Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets are facing off in a matchup that had much greater hype before the season began.

For the Chiefs, a star-studded lineup will take the field against the Jets on Sunday evening, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce, and defensive lineman Chris Jones. For the Jets, the stout defense is there but instead of watching newly-acquired veteran Aaron Rodgers attempt to go toe-to-toe with Mahomes, it will be Zach Wilson instead.

Rodgers went down just four plays into this year with a season-ending Achilles injury for the Jets, which sidelined the high expectations analysts and fans placed upon New York coming into the season. It also thwarted the long-awaited matchup between the two quarterbacks after two previous failed attempts in the last four years. Back in 2019, Mahomes suffered a knee injury and was forced to miss two games—one of which came against the Green Bay Packers. Then Aaron Rodgers was sidelined by a bout with COVID and was forced to miss his next scheduled game against the Chiefs.

Will the NFL ever get to see Rodgers versus Mahomes? It's hard to say but for now what is clear is that Wilson vs Mahomes is a far less enticing matchup. The Jets can only hope their defensive talent can keep things close and that the Chiefs shoot themselves in the foot in the same way they did in Week 1 against the Lions.
