The Kansas City Chiefs have a lot to celebrate. They also have a lot of business to take care of. They're hoping to somehow do both on Thursday night.

The Chiefs open the NFL season on Thursday with a primetime showdown against the visiting Detroit Lions, who are hoping to pull off a significant upset and start their season the way last year ended—with a whole bunch of wins.

For the Chiefs, however, the stakes are quite high as they open the year with significant issues up front on defense while playing at home while unveiling the championship banner from last year. Expectations are high once again in Kansas City and every team is going to rise up to give them their best effort, Detroit included.

The Lions completely reinvented their rushing attack with the signing of David Montgomery in free agency and the drafting of Jahmyr Gibbs. The Chiefs lack significant muscle up front with the holdout of Chris Jones, the injury concerns for Turk Wharton, the new-ness of Neil Farrell, and the suspension of Charles Omenihu. That's one area that could be important to watch.

Either way, the Chiefs and Lions are opening the NFL season and even if it wasn't featuring two young and exciting franchises, we'd all still tune in for the beginning of another season of America's most popular sport. Fortunately, however, we're likely in for one heckuva game.
