More Free Agent Edge Players For The Chiefs

These three free agent edge players may not have the big names of the players on the avoid list or ties to the Chiefs like the first three options, but they would all be solid free agent additions.

Dawuane Smoot

  • 6'3" - 264 pounds - 28 years old
  • 5 sacks in 445 snaps played
  • 56.4 PFF run defense grade
  • 73.4 PFF pass rush grade

Dawuane Smoot is right up there near the top of my wish list for KC. Smoot is six years younger than the former Chiefs who are all 34 years old. Plus, Smoot has experience playing under Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen while in Jacksonville. Smoot wasn't great against the run last season, but was a good rotational pass rusher. That is a good fit for what KC's edge room needs which is a veteran who can play outside on passing downs.

Kyle Van Noy

  • 6'3" - 250 pounds - 32 years old
  • 5 sacks in 784 snaps played
  • 63.1 PFF run defense grade
  • 65.5 PFF pass rush grade

Kyle Van Noy is a solid football player who offers position versatility. Van Noy has played both on the edge and as an off-ball linebacker in the NFL. As an edge player he could provide the Chiefs what they need as a veteran outside pass rusher. He also has experience playing with new Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill. However, the Chiefs already have a solid linebacker room so he may look for a team where his linebacker versatility could be taken advantage of more.

Carl Nassib

  • 6'7" - 275 pounds - 30 years old
  • 3.5 sacks in 275 snaps played
  • 68.9 PFF run defense graede
  • 64.2 PFF pass rush grade

Carl Nassib isn't flashy, but he's been a solid rotational edge player for Tampa Bay and Las Vegas over the past several seasons. Nassib meets all the bench marks of a Spagnuolo defensive end with great size/length, long arms, and an ability to hold up against the run. He's lower on my wish list because he isn't as good of pure pass rusher as some of the other guys, but he'd likely be a similar player to Carlos Dunlap and is about 4 years younger.

If none of those options do much for you, there is one more option. The Chiefs could trade for a higher profile option than the free agents that are available.
