The Kansas City Chiefs haven't made an official injury announcement yet for star tight end Travis Kelce (or any other injured players for that matter) when it comes to their availability for the team's upcoming game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday evening. However, the latest news to break details that Kelce is dealing with a bone bruise following Wednesday's practice.

On Wednesday, head coach Andy Reid spoke to reporters saying that Kelce had suffered a knee injury—a hyperextension—during practice on some red zone drills. From there, the knee was swollen enough to cause trainers to wonder whether he would be able to play or not and Reid said the team would have to wait and see. A subsequent MRI ruled out long-term damage.

Coming into Week 1, Travis Kelce sounds like a player who is unlikely to go against the Detroit Lions.

On Thursday, NFL reporter Ian Rapoport detailed that Kelce had a bone bruise after all.

For the Chiefs, this really feels like the best bet is to rest Kelce for the short term knowing their long-term goals have not changed. A bone bruise is a short-term injury but it can cause a player to miss more time than what anyone has really feared about Kelce so far.

Back in 2020, wide receiver A.J. Brown sat out two games with a bone bruise for the Tennessee Titans. In 2021, it was a bone bruise that knocked out quarterback Andy Dalton with the Chicago Bears and Justin Fields took over his role on a permanent basis. Even more recently Lamar Jackson said it was a bone bruise that knocked him out of the final four games of the 2021 season.

In a bit of good news, however, Kelce's brother Jason, who plays center for the Philadelphia Eagles, spoke highly of his brother's ability to return on a radio show interview in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning. But Kelce detailed a bit more of what to expect and what his brother is going through.

"I know he's got some swelling going on, but it sounds like as long as they can get that down, he's gonna have a chance to go. The ligaments and everything are intact structurally from what we know right now, his knee is fine. So really it's about getting that swelling down and seeing how bruised that bone is. If you guys have ever had those, it can be pretty painful, especially if it's in a spot that's rubbing all of the time. That can shut down your muscles and do other things. But I think he's gonna be good to go. I really do."

The Lions visit the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night with kickoff set for 7:20 p.m.
