Tony Gonzalez reveals he would suit up for Chiefs again on one condition
By Matt Conner
Our exclusive interview with Tony Gonzalez yielded some intriguing answers to questions about his favorite moment with K.C. and whether or not he still "has it".
How long does a legend still "have it"? According to Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez, at least at the age of 48. That's because the Kansas City Chiefs legend is still in tremendous shape and could even hit the field one more time if needed.
To be fair to Gonzalez, he's going to "have it" for a lot longer than the present, but what else would you expect from the man who singlehandedly reinvented an entire position in the NFL. Before Tony Gonzalez, the tight end as a truly featured weapon was unheard of.
Sure, they could be good—even great—and some teams were fortunate enough to have such stable help on hand. But game-changing talents with killer instincts, basketball bodies, velcro hands, and silky-smooth fluidity? Gonzalez created a new tier.
So when a man with 14 Pro Bowls says he could still be productive on the field even well past the expiration date of even the most storied vets in NFL history, you gotta believe him.
Gonzalez recently sat down for an exclusive interview, via a sponsorship with Crown Royal, with our own Patrick Allen for an in-depth discussion of the Chiefs' three-peat chances, wanting to catch passes from the likes of Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, and his favorite moment as a Chief. But he also happened to mention the fact that he could still get the job done on the field in the right circumstances.
Patrick: You always kept yourself in incredible shape during your playing career and after. You’re 48 now. I’m curious, if you had time to prepare to play in one more NFL game with a great quarterback like Patrick Mahomes, what stat line do you think you could put up?
Tony: You know, I work out religiously. I feel good. I was just thinking about this this morning—I feel good. I think I look pretty good. I’m almost the same weight as I was when I was playing, but I don’t know about the ligaments and joints, but those actually feel pretty good too. So I think if I went out there and trained, I think I could get a good 35 yards, maybe a red zone touchdown—just throw it up there and let me go get it.
Patrick: So if the Chiefs made it back to the Super Bowl and they called you and said, “Hey Tony, we need a little bit of help out there,” would you consider it?
Tony: Yeah, I would consider it.
