Tommy Townsend hires new representation in Drew Rosenhaus
By Matt Conner
The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of potential long-term contract extensions to think about these days, and we encourage them to get to some faster than others, but eventually, the team is going to have to decide on their commitment to Tommy Townsend.
Townsend, the Chiefs punter for the last three seasons, has become one of the league's best young specialists and he knows it. Townsend was named a first-team All-Pro just last season as well as a Pro Bowler—both for the first time in 2022.
All of this is why he recently hired super-agent Drew Rosenhaus to be his representative in any negotiations going forward from here on out. Rosenhaus posted the news on social media late on Tuesday night.
The shift to Rosenhaus shouldn't concern too many fans in Chiefs Kingdom, however. Rosenhaus certainly drives a hard bargain and, yes, he was the agent for wide receiver Tyreek Hill in the offseason that ultimately forced K.C. to trade him away to the Miami Dolphins. But remember that Hill had also already signed a very team-friendly deal on his second contract. Plus it's not as if the Chiefs were forced to take a subpar package for Hill from Miami.
Tommy Townsend should be getting a big deal from someone soon—and the Chiefs would be smart to do it.
Even this offseason the Chiefs negotiated with Rosenhaus and his staff to secure the services of their single biggest free agent signing: offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor. Last year, Rosenhaus represented Carlos Dunlap on a one-year deal and previous deals have been made between both team and agent for role players like safety Adrian Colbert, cornerback Antonio Hamilton, running back LeSean McCoy and more.
As for Townsend, the young punter enters his contract season having already broken out as a specialist known for both his power and accuracy. While the Chiefs rely less on their kicker and punter than most teams due to their offensive efficiency, Townsend has still become a valuable weapon to help the team flip the field. In 2022, he averaged 50.4 yards/punt.
