Training camp is officially underway. The NFL regular season is just over a month away. And with that, the hype around the back-to-back Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs has probably never been higher.
Even though the Chiefs have been dominant in the postseason for years now, one thing that has seemingly eluded them is postseason honors. With the exception of Patrick Mahomes, no player in recent memory has taken home hardware at the (incredibly awkward) NFL Awards.
Could we see that change this year? This team is even more loaded than they were last year, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see at least one other Chiefs player win one of these regular season awards. Here is who I think are the players with the best shots at each award.
Xavier Worthy - Offensive Rookie of the Year
Did you see the catch made in practice the other day? In case you missed it, here you go.
Never mind the beautiful pass from Patrick Mahomes. This tandem could be incredible barring any injuries. Xavier Worthy is primed to be an Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate from day one. If Mahomes hits him for a huge bomb of a touchdown in Week 1, the competition might be over.
The Chiefs have never had an OROY winner before (although if Mahomes had started his rookie year, that probably wouldn't be the case). I think Worthy would definitely be, well, worthy of the honor. He's already the fastest player in NFL Combine history. We all know what happened the last time the Chiefs had the fastest player in the NFL.
Jaden Hicks - Defensive Rookie of the Year
The Chiefs have had four (!) players win this award before. Can you remember the most recent one? I'll give you a few seconds to think about it. In the meantime, the best player to win this one was Derrick Johnson. Speaking of, the Chiefs legend stopped by Training Camp last week, and it was great to see him again.
Okay, so who was the most recent DROY winner for the Chiefs? Marcus Peters. I still remember watching him get his first interception, on his first snap of his career. I don't remember the quarterback, it was definitely against the Texans.
Enough dwelling on the past. This story is about current players who have a chance at the award. It's admittedly slim-pickings since the Chiefs only drafted two defensive players. No disrespect to the undrafted free agents, but I'm sticking with the draftees and taking Jaden Hicks here.
This prediction is largely predicated on the fact that Justin Reid is hurt, and that could lead to Hicks getting significantly more playing time than expected. The opportunity is there for the taking for Hicks to show he's the next in a long line of successful drafted defensive backs for the Chiefs.
Since I said I didn't want to disrespect the UDFA's here, I will also throw out linebacker Curtis Jacobs. At least one writer thought this signing was a steal for the Chiefs. If he works out he could join Johnson as Chiefs linebackers to win DROY, too.
Travis Kelce - Offensive Player of the Year
Doesn't it just seem like it's time? Even in his worst season in years, Kelce was still the best tight end in football. He was also darn near one of the best offensive players. The fact that not once in his seven straight 1,000 yard seasons was he even considered for OPOY should be criminal.
Will Killa Trav reach those levels of greatness again this year? Maybe not. But I'd be fine with this becoming a "lifetime achievement award". Make the committee (or whoever votes on these things) personally apologize for not giving him one sooner.
Still not convincing enough? Alright, pulling out old reliable here: do it for the Swifties. Do you know how many eyeballs the NFL Awards would have if the Taylor Swift cult knew their man was going to be on stage? It's too big of an opportunity to miss. These awards are all marketing anyways. Give the people what they want.
Travis Kelce for President. I mean Player of the Year.
Chris Jones - Defensive Player of the Year
Again, another obvious choice that has been snubbed over and over again. I mentioned that these awards are all about marketing and name recognition. Unfortunately for Chris Jones, he's been overshadowed by another defensive tackle named Aaron Donald.
Well, Donald is now enjoying retirement with his one ring while Jones embarks on the journey to his fourth. Maybe this will finally be the year that people start to pay attention to just how good this man is.
One of my pet peeves of the last couple of years was seeing players like Micah Parsons and Miles Garrett (both incredible players) continue to get brought up for DPOY with little to no fanfare for our boy Chris Jones. It's time for this travesty to end.
Jones isn't skipping training camp this year thanks to his new and deserved contract. That means he has a full offseason to get into shape and be even more dominant than he was last year. With the Chiefs on threepeat alert, maybe the media (who really does vote on these awards) will finally put some respect on his name.
Patrick Mahomes - MVP
Who else could this possibly be? This is a quarterback award and the Chiefs just so happen to have the best quarterback in the game.
Only three people have won this award in the past six years. Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson. Why not keep the party going? I heard someone the other day (Nick Wright maybe?) say that Mahomes has already reached the point in his career where he's doing the "side quests".
Winning a third MVP award would be a pretty good side quest to finish. Mahomes recently said that last year "wasn't fun". Well, checking out the pantry full of weapons that he has now, I think that's going to change for the better.
Fun is back on the menu boys and Mahomes has a realistic shot at this award every year. I like to joke that they have to give it to someone else every once in a while. Mahomes is well on his way to chasing Brady in rings, but a third MVP would also put him on track to matching Peyton Manning's five.
Imagine if this this offense is as potent as it looks like it can be and the Chiefs sweep OROY, OPOY, and MVP? You just know that if that's how it starts to look by week 5, Chris Jones is going to play lights out just so that he's not the only one left off the stage.
Bonus: Andy Reid - Coach of the Year
Gee, I wonder who the best Chief for this award could be? I'm throwing this one in here more so to point out that Andy has never won Coach of the Year with the Chiefs. Yeah, you read that right. For all his success with this team, it's never happened.
To be fair, he did win it with the Eagles in 2002. But it is malpractice to not have given him this award at some point in the last decade. I know COY usually goes to a head coach who turns around a team quickly (and then quickly turns out to be a terrible head coach), but give the fourth-winningest head coach in NFL history some love.
