QUARTERBACKS

Obviously, Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL. No reasonable person will disagree with that. However, their QB1 is not the only reason why the quarterback position is on this list. Their QB2, Carson Wentz, also plays a significant role.

In previous seasons, the Chiefs have opted for veteran backups with lower ceilings who could serve as quasi-coaches. Chad Henne, Matt Moore, and Blaine Gabbert weren't the flashiest players, but they knew the offense and could manage the team for a short period if needed, which proved useful several times.

Carson Wentz is not like the previous backups to Mahomes. He doesn't offer the steady presence the Chiefs have valued in recent years, but he undoubtedly has more raw talent than any of them.

While his days as a bona fide starter are likely over, Wentz raises the ceiling of the offense if Mahomes goes down for a few games, as he did in 2019. Any quarterback who isn't Mahomes is a significant downgrade, but Wentz offers a chance to retain some explosiveness and plays a style of football similar to Mahomes. Though he's struggled as a starter since 2020, his talent gives the Chiefs a fighting chance in a limited role.

Would the Chiefs be Super Bowl contenders with Carson Wentz under center? No, but he elevates the QB2 role, and Kansas City wouldn't necessarily be in trouble if he had to suit up for a short stretch of games.
