Raiders cornerback does his best to avoid making a play on the ball

We're not sure what Jack Jones is thinking here but Antonio Pierce is going to hate this.

We don't want to see anyone lose his job, but at this point, it's hard to see Jack Jones holding onto his. That's because Antonio Pierce is going to lose his lid when he looks back at the tape of the Las Vegas Raiders cornerback's odd way of playing defense in Week 3.

For the sake of review, the Raiders took home the worst loss of the week in the NFL on Sunday when they were clobbered by the Carolina Panthers, a formerly winless team with an anemic track record of generating anything positive on the offensive side. On Sunday, however, a quarterback switch to Andy Dalton—yep, that Andy Dalton—somehow yielded 36 points.

And yes, the Raiders were at home.

For the Panthers to own anyone so outright in 2024 is beyond insulting. It's perplexing. Perhaps that's why Pierce, the team's head coach, had some harsh words for his team's performance after the game. "We got our ass whupped ... I would have booed us too."

Back to Jones for a second. While he might have come through on other plays, one was being shared online that represented the sort of frustrating efforts that drove Pierce crazy on Sunday.

That's a Marcus Peters-at-his-worst effort right there, so the pain of watching someone occasionally dance around the action without actually getting involved is somewhat familiar. As a Chiefs fan, you love to see it on a rival, however.

Jones was already cut by the New England Patriots after being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by Belichick and company. He earned a starting role for the Pats due to his considerable natural talent, but a hamstring injury sidelined him and his lack of effort ultimately cost him. He was released and the Raiders claimed him last fall.

But no one can expect Jones to play all that well as a former Round 4 selection. Finding quality defensive backs in the fourth like L'Jarius Sneed, Jaden Hicks, Chamarri Conner, or Joshua Williams can be hard. It's even worse in later rounds like the seventh (Nazeeh Johnson, Jaylen Watson, Nic Jones) or even trying for someone undrafted (Charvarius Ward, Chris Roland-Wallace).

This should be a fun week in Vegas.
