Many Kansas City Chiefs fans have been waiting for more than a year for this sort of moment. But the good news is that Patrick Mahomes says there's more of Justyn Ross to comes for the team's offense in the weeks and months ahead.
Ross is a second-year wide receiver for the Chiefs who was an instant fan favorite as a rookie free agent signing who was once the buzz of all of college football. Early in his career at Clemson, Ross looked like a future star in the NFL with his big 6'4" frame, incredible hands, and full athletic profile. Scouts raved about his future even as he dominated in the present—he was the talk of the nation during his freshman year.
Unfortunately, Ross would land on some hard time after suffering multiple injuries and the buzz died down in the wake of a significant spinal injury that forced some to question if he'd ever really play again.
Following his career at Clemson, Ross joined the Chiefs as an undrafted prospect and the team stashed him on injured reserve. Ross earned a spot on this offseason's roster as well and inspired the Chiefs enough in training camp to make the active version on game days.
On Sunday, Ross caught 2 of 4 targets thrown his way for 28 yards. One was a very important first-down conversion early, and it was the sort of big, physical reach that the Chiefs could use a lot more of. Fortuntely, Patrick Mahomes says that's exactly why the Chiefs plan to use him more in the coming weeks.
"Everybody knows he has the talent... He has the talent. We're going to keep bringing him on and keep moving him around in different positions," said Mahomes to reporters following the game.
If Ross can be part of an overall breakout effort to showcase the wide receivers more, we're all here for it. With the way Rashee Rice is looking and how Justin Watson can be sneaky yet productive, the Chiefs offense might right itself quicker than we believed.
