Patrick Mahomes climbs Chiefs' all-time passing list in the most Patrick Mahomes way

It was only a matter of time.

Coming into the '24 regular season, it was clear that Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was going to break the all-time franchise record for most passing yards in a career early in the team's schedule. As it turned out, Mahomes only needed a single half of football to do it and he did so in the most Mahomesian way possible.

What else should Chiefs Kingdom expect?

Even Lenny the Cool has to move over to make room for Mahomes.

As the Chiefs hosted the Baltimore Ravens for the NFL's season-opening game on Thursday evening, Mahomes went to work early with three scoring drives on the first four drives of the game—including a touchdown to open things up. While Mahomes looked to be in mid-season form with early strikes to Rashee Rice, it was a thrilling pass to tight end Travis Kelce that set the franchise record for most passing yards in a career.

That's a 23-yard strike to Kelce that allowed Mahomes to officially eclipse the great Len Dawson as the team's all-time leader. Dawson, who finished his career with 28,507 yards, held the Chiefs record since 1975—a run of 49 seasons before it was broken.

Dawson is no less of a Chiefs legend for having lost the record. Lenny the Cool delivered the first Lombardi Trophy for the Chiefs back in Super Bowl IV and was the team's first great signal-caller. Dawson's place in franchise lore is forever etched and no amount of history-making fireworks could erase Dawson's legacy or even take away from it in any way.

That said, given the fact that Mahomes is still only 28 years old, we're pretty sure the record is going to be quite a bit higher when all is said and done in PM15's career.
