The Kansas City Chiefs are no strangers to having to make difficult decisions during the offseason. This past offseason, after winning their second straight Super Bowl, was no different.

One of the tough choices KC had to make in the 2024 offseason involved their star cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, who had balled out during the 2023 season. His play during the AFC Championship Game against the Ravens where he stripped the ball out of Zay Flowers' hands was massive and without that play, Baltimore might have gained enough momentum to win the game and advance to the Super Bowl.

Well, the Chiefs ended up trading Sneed to the Tennessee Titans rather than paying him the rich contract he was expected to land in the offseason. The Titans immediately paid Sneed $76.4 million on a four-year deal.

Sneed recently spoke on The Pivot about the trade and how his feelings were deeply hurt when the team that drafted him sent him packing. He mentioned how upset he was and how much he loved Kansas City. He said he won Super Bowls and was angry when the team traded him because "I wanted to stay."

L'Jarius Sneed was angry when Chiefs traded him

Football is a business and Sneed surely understands that. They had opted to pay Chris Jones his five-year deal worth $158.7 million and that meant they couldn't also afford to keep Sneed. Tennessee was willing to trade for Sneed and pay him after acquiring him and it was a done deal.

Some Chiefs fans felt like the team got fleeced in the deal but Carrington Harrison of 610 Sports had previously reported that Sneed's knee was "not in good shape". He also made a good point about teams knowing the Chiefs weren't going to pay Sneed.

It makes sense that Sneed is angry about being shipped off after helping the team win two Super Bowls but these are the kind of moves the Chiefs have to make if they want to continue to win championships. We saw the Patriots make these kinds of decisions all the time during their two decade-long window and now the Chiefs have to follow a similar path if they want to stay atop the NFL mountain for as long as possible.
