3. Truman Jones, Defensive End, Harvard

Like offensive linemen, you can never have enough defensive linemen. With Charles Omenihu, George Karlaftis, Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Mike Danna locking up the top four spots, this too will be a tough unit to crack

It is likely that the Chiefs will bring in a veteran edge rusher and the Chiefs drafted BJ Thompson in the 5th round of the 2023 NFL draft. Last year the Chiefs decided to roll with six edge rushers and four interior defenders to round out their defensive line.

If they go with the same approach, Jones’ competition will be Thompson, third-year vet Joshua Kaindoh and a fellow former undrafted free agent in Malik Herring. Thompson is an exciting speed rusher, but as a 240-pound edge rusher, he has some developing to do.

If Jones could beat out Kaindoh and Herring, the Chiefs could reset the clock, if you will, on developmental edge rushers. Especially ones who have taken up roster spots the last couple of years with 146 combined defensive snaps played to show for it.

As for Jones, he played at a lower level but racked up 19.5 sacks across three seasons, earning Third-Team All-American honors in the FCS. He has NFL edge rusher length and is capable of setting the edge, which is music to Steve Spagnolo’s ears.

This is a long shot, but Tershawn Wharton did something similar a few years ago.
