KC Chiefs sign new wide receiver, tight end before Week 16

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a couple of pass catchers to the roster with only a few weeks left in the regular season. On Wednesday, NFL reporter Aaron Wilson had word that the Chiefs will reportedly sign wide receiver Anthony MIller and tight end Izaiah Gathings after hosting tryouts earlier this week.

Gathings is a long-term play at tight end in the same way that Jody Fortson was when he first signed. A prospect out of Middle Tennessee State (Darius Harris, Charvarius Ward), Gathings signed with the Chiefs last spring as a rookie free agent who was a former receiver turned tight end. Gathings originally signed with the New York Jets out of camp but the Chiefs signed him after he was cut loose.

The ability to sign Gathings now is likely tied to keeping him on the roster long-term and away from other NFL teams hoping to ink him to a futures deal. Expect the Chiefs to offer him that once the postseason is over.

As for Miller, he's a veteran who fans might recognize after playing for various teams around the NFL. He was originally a second-round pick by the Chicago Bears back in 2018 and he spent a few seasons there before landing with the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021. He spent this past preseason with the San Francisco 49ers before being cut.

Miller's addition makes sense as a practice squad signing who adds security to a unit with injuries at present to Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman and with a history of them with Kadarius Toney and Richie James and Justyn Ross.
