The Tuesday practice session for the Kansas City Chiefs took a rough turn as three wide receivers exited early due to apparent injuries.
According to Nate Taylor of The Athletic, rookie Nikko Remigio had to be carted off the field after suffering an apparent upper-body injury.
In a subsequent development, Matt Derrick also confirmed that fellow wide receivers Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Justyn Ross had to cut short their practice involvement due to injuries.
Matt Derrick also shared that both Justyn Ross and Ihmir Smith-Marsette were transported back to the facility in the same cart, with Ross occupying the front seat.
About an hour later, Nate Taylor reported that Smith-Marsette left due to a groin injury and Ross a left knee/hamstring injury, while Remigio dislocated his left shoulder. Ian Rapoport tweeted that Justyn Ross' injury does not appear to be serious.
Remigio showcased a strong start to his NFL journey, amassing four receptions and 71 receiving yards in his debut against the New Orleans Saints last Sunday. Hailing from Fresno State, the rookie is vying for a place on the roster, primarily as a punt returner.
Smith-Marsette's NFL journey began when he was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. However, he was waived during last year's training camp. Following a brief stint with the Chicago Bears, he found his way to the Chiefs' practice squad in October. During the recent matchup against the Saints, he secured a single reception for 2 yards.
Among the three players to exit practice early, Ross is the most recognizable name. He has gained significant attention during this training camp for his solid play and potential. After going undrafted in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs signed him as a free agent. His rookie season in 2022 was spent on injured reserve due to a foot injury, but this year he is anticipated to secure a roster spot after training camp. In the recent preseason game against the Saints, Ross stood out with two receptions for 29 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass from Shane Buechele during the third quarter.
In another unfortunate update on injuries, Matt McMullen has reported that Andy Reid announced Jody Fortson's season has come to an end due to a shoulder injury, resulting in his placement on injured reserve. According to NFL rules, players placed on injured reserve before August 30th at 3 PM Central Time are ineligible to return at any point this season.
Fortson, in his fifth NFL season, was also poised to contend for a pivotal role as a primary red zone threat for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense. Unfortunately, this marks the second instance in three seasons that Fortson has experienced a season-ending injury resulting.
Further updates will be provided as they become available.
