How are Super Bowl officials chosen?
How does the NFL decide which officiating crew gets to call the Super Bowl each year?
NFL officials have an important job: Ensure that the game is played according to the rules. While the officials have certainly made some games about them in the past, they're still an important part of the league.
Dean Blandino, former VP of Officiating, appeared on The 33rd Team ahead of Super Bowl LVI to discuss this very matter. He mentioned that there are certain requirements that officials must have to be picked for the Super Bowl.
These include working in the NFL for at least five seasons, must have officiated a playoff game in the past, and must have worked at least three years as a referee while also hitting the required five-year minimum. He also said that it's important for these refs to have worked with each other in the past as well.
For Super Bowl LVIII, the head of the officiating crew will be Bill Vinovich. You can see who else will be officiating in the tweet below.
