With the preseason officially wrapped, it's time for the Kansas City Chiefs coaching staff to make some tough decisions about which players will make the team.
Let's look at the tough decisions facing general manager Brett Veach and predict how things will turn out for the Chiefs players by Tuesday when active roster cuts are due.
Quarterbacks (2)
• Patrick Mahomes
• Blaine Gabbert
Shane Buechele made this interesting, but his two-turnover performance on Saturday afternoon likely sealed his fate. One could argue that he has a higher ceiling than veteran Blaine Gabbert, but it's also true that he has a lower floor. From a backup standpoint, you want a player who will take care of the football and throw the ball away when necessary. Buechele threw two interceptions in Kansas City's final preseason game and that's a bad final impression for him to make.
Running backs (4)
• Isiah Pacheco
• Clyde Edwards-Helaire
• Jerick McKinnon
• La'Mical Perine
Earlier in the offseason, I gushed about the possibilities for undrafted free agent Deneric Prince. I still believe he has a future with the team, but the preseason has shown us he may not be ready to contribute at this level. He should be a prime practice squad target, but I think he might need another year to mature as a player.
